• New working ia64 installer images available

From John Paul Adrian Glaubitz@21:1/5 to All on Sat Apr 17 21:00:02 2021
    Hi!

Today's installer images for ia64 [1] include a fix for GRUB so that the
images are finally bootable again. Since the 5.10 kernel in use already contains a lot of ia64 fixes, it will work on many ia64 machines already
except for larger machines like the RX2800 which require at least kernel
    5.12.

Since Debian unstable is currently effectively frozen due to testing being frozen for the imminent release, the kernel package in Debian unstable is currently stuck at version 5.10 until Debian Bullseye is released which
should happen within the next weeks [2].

So while installing on RX2800 and similar machines currently does not work
yet, most smaller ia64 machines should work and I would therefore like to
get some installation reports for ia64 with today's images.

    Thanks,
    Adrian

Just to confirm: I built and installed kernel 5.12-rc8 on an RX2800 today and it boots fine without any additional patches. That means once 5.12 hits Debian unstable, we will have working installer images for RX2800 and similar machines again for the first time since Debian Wheezy (or even Squeeze since Wheezy had elilo issues on some of these machines).

And my RAID controller has firmware 7.24. I did actually have SMP issues
when the firmware version of the RAID controller was too old.

The machine booted fine with "nosmp" with the old RAID firmware though.

Make sure your RAID controller firmware is very recent as well. I think
7.24 was the most recent version that was publicly available.

I can only say that I did have kernel crashes due to an outdated firmware version on the RAID controller which could be worked around by booting
    with "nosmp".

I currently have no other idea as the kernel boots fine on my RX2660 and
    it's already late here.

My RAID controller has 7.18, so that is older. I should get that upgraded.

I tried with “nosmp” - still no dice. Same crash followed by the same hang.

Then I'm currently out of ideas. It boots fine on my RX2660, as I said.

You might want to try 5.12-rc8 on your machine.

Yeah, usercopy check is currently broken.

I workaround it locally with using linear mapping (seems not to break
anything on ia64), but I'm not sure it's correct for all arches.

Need to spend some time before sending out in a proper form.

    Hello Pedro!

I have run into the exact crash on an RX2800 on kernel 5.14.6.

However, I was able to mitigate the problem by passing

    hardened_usercopy=off

    on the kernel command line.

Please give it a try with the latest images which use kernel 5.14.6 [1].

    Adrian
