Dear Hurd team,
Please, we are students from computer science department. We were asked to develop a system program as service to and then try to add it to the GNU HURD microkernel. Actually we must choose a service that does
not exist in Hurd os. Can you help us to recognize that please?
Regards,
CS students
Dear Ibtisam Al Hinai,
How much time and how many people do you have to realize a service?
Starting points to get into Hurd development are at https://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/contributing.html#index1h2
larger interesting things to build can be found on https://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/community/gsoc/project_ideas.html
Best wishes,
Arne

Dear Dr. Arne,
We are group of three student. We have a shourt time. So we want to start with a simple service.
Our initial idea is to develop a service as a security system to protect files that are in the server by password.
Now we want to make sure that this service is not already available in the Hurd microkernel.
Well if there are any tips or directions please send it to us.
Also if we program this service using Python. How we can integrate it into the Hurd microkernel.
Many Thanks,
CS students

Hello,
do you mean that you set a translator that automatically encrypts the
files as they are accessed?
Do you already have a Hurd VM running, and did you already experiment
with the available translators to get an idea how Hurd translators work
and what they can do?
That is the first important step.
Here is a start:
https://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/contributing.html#index4h2
After logging into your VM, you’ll find a translator_primer. Try out
what it does, then you’ll have a much better idea of what you can do
with the Hurd.
Also I recently wrote about my own Hurd development setup: https://www.draketo.de/software/hurd-development-environment
Best wishes,
Arne
