    In any case moving all the contents of /usr so that it is in the same
    partition as / may involve disk space problems, since there -- temporarily
    -- has to be enougn space for both the old /usr partition and the new
    enlarged / partition.

    I can see trouble in systems where storage is tight or it is difficult to expand /.

    Merging /usr into the root filesystem isn't the plan. Usrmerge moves everything into /usr, which seems much less likely to strain your
    partitioning setup. It's still possible, of course, which must be why
    the usrmerge script needs a check_free_space() function.

    "Storage is tight" is already trouble, especially when you're trying
    to download and install new versions of GNOME and LibreOffice and so
    on as part of a distribution upgrade; see Release Notes 4.4.3.
