• Bits from the DAMs

From Joerg Jaspert@21:1/5 to All on Sat Oct 8 16:20:01 2022
    Hello everybody,

Not having sent a "bits" type mail for a little while now, we thought it
is about time for one, so here we are, fresh in your inbox. We would
like to give you a short summary of recent changes within the team and
also reiterate some (we think) important points, that got mentioned all
over, during the time since we last wrote such a mail.

    Topics in this mail:
    1. New team members
    2. Team structure change
    3. Thresholds for DAM action
    4. More around DAM

    1. New team members
    -------------------
In February 2022, the team expanded[DELEG] with the addition of Stuart
Prescott <stuart> and Nicolas Dandrimont <olasd>, bringing us up to 5
members. This was preceded by the new members being trainees[TRAINEE]
for some time, to get to know what DAM involves.

    2. Team structure change
    ------------------------
With the inclusion of new active members in the team, DAM is now able to
adjust the internal team organization a bit and introduce a new role -
the DAM advisor. That is a role for DAM members who are no longer
involved in the daily tasks of DAM, but stay available for input,
(historical) knowledge and - well, to advise when needed. DAM advisors
keep their access to the DAM GPG key.

Enrico Zini is stepping back from work as an active Debian Account
Manager and remaining as DAM advisor. We wish to offer our immense
appreciation to Enrico for his contributions over many years and that we
are very pleased to be able to continue to work with him in this new
    role.

There are plans to adjust the DAM delegation, which then will include a
more formal definition of this role and possibly more as details will be sketched out, we will be working on that together with the DPL.

    3. Thresholds for DAM action
    ----------------------------
In various recent discussions we have noticed people mention that they
"cannot say this, or DAM may expel them". This is not backed by facts
(we've only had to go through with 8 expulsions since 2006) and it
originates from wrong assumptions. DAM action is the last step in a long process, with others involved first. DAM are neither thought police nor
are we policing the project. In short: if you respect the ideas of the
CoC and interact constructively, not destructively, if you interact
politely and respectfully with your peers, you will never "run the
risk". Even if you end up having a bad day, and we recognize those do
happen to any of us, that's not something that leads to expulsion from
Debian - but it is important to deal with those bad days correctly
    afterwards.

We would like _all_ the members of our community to be active in
upholding our conduct standards - the Community Team have an important
role to play but it's not just their responsibility. If you notice that
someone is having a bad day, or acting in a way that does not live up to
our community standards, please try to provide constructive feedback.
And if you receive such feedback - please take some time to think about
it, understand where it is coming from, and act on it. Community-related
DAM action only ever happens at a point where attempts at constructive
feedback by the community have failed.

    4. More around DAM
    ------------------
Between our last "Bits from" mail and now we issued quite a few
statements, policies and informational content. A good list of the
relevant mails can be found at [DAMwiki] - thanks to everyone who keeps
    this page current!

Remember, if you want to contact us confidentially, you can do so with a
mail encrypted to our GPG key:
