Hello,
(Cc'ing me is okay)
I'm considering updating the «jewel in the crown» of Debian, which is of course the Installation Guide, a must for new users and also the older ones.
But first I'd like to know what the workflow would be for the job to be done, considering I'm used to PO files and not XML based translations. Also, what's
lacking and what needs to be done (percentage of missing translations, fuzzy strings and so on).
Looking at the Salsa GIT server¹ I can't figure out where theses files
are located for the Spanish language², so any hint on how to get the job done
would be appreciated.

Thank you for wanting to help in this translation. In the past I
contributed huge chunks of time to it but have not been able to keep up.

Updating the Installation Guide is pretty straightforward, you first have
to download the GIT repository and the go directly to the po/es/ directory. Updating the different translation files you find there. The fact that the document is based on XML should not be a problem.
To test the translation you can build the documentation using the scripts
in the build/ directory (by setting the "languages" variable you can make
the scripts build only the content in Spanish and skip the other languages.
If you do not have (yet) access you can send me the PO files and I will upload to Salsa.

Hmm, you already found the correct git repository at Salsa, and you also found
the directory ../po/es where the spanish po files are (above at ¹).
So, I'm unsure what you want me to do.
Statistics for the installation-guide can be found at https://d-i.debian.org/manual/
at the bottom of the page.
The fact is that your answer makes me think I'm missing the point that
these PO files are indeed the Installation Guide manual itself. Is that right? I always (maybe wrongly) thought installation-guide PO files were intended for
Debian installer screen¹ and Installation Guide manual was a separate
set of XML based files, ending up in our beloved online manual².

Statistics for the installation-guide can be found at https://d-i.debian.org/manual/Yes, thanks, I already used that page to know about the status of the translations. I was just confused by the nomenclature in there, I
at the bottom of the page.
mean, I thought PO-based translations (Spanish is at 89%) were different from XML-based translations (no stats at all, so... nobody's using XML format?). If you say keeping PO files updated is all what we need to keep the Installation Guide XML synced and up-to-date, I'll just keep my current
work on these files.

The strings shown during the installation are here

Spanish looks pretty good:
$ find d-i/packages/po/sublevel?/ -name es.po -print -exec msgfmt --statistics {} \;
d-i/packages/po/sublevel1/es.po
458 mesaje traduse, 25 traduceri aproximative(fuzzy), 2 mesaje netraduse. d-i/packages/po/sublevel2/es.po
516 mesaje traduse, 30 traduceri aproximative(fuzzy), 4 mesaje netraduse. d-i/packages/po/sublevel3/es.po
705 mesaje traduse, 14 traduceri aproximative(fuzzy). d-i/packages/po/sublevel4/es.po
66 mesaje traduse.
d-i/packages/po/sublevel5/es.po
52 mesaje traduse.

till some years ago some langs directory edited the xml files
and didn't use po infrastructure;
now all langs use po and "XML-based translations" can be removed
"nobody's using XML format" is not correct;
the machine converts xml <=> po and translators can use its benefit
