• Translation status robot not working?

This is a MIME-formatted message. If you see this text it means that your E-mail software does not support MIME-formatted messages.

    Hello,
for several days, the status of the debian translations are not
updated, it looks like the robot does not parse the lists (or does not
    update the pages afterwards).

    Example:
    https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po-debconf/de
lists slm still as pending, but the Report has already been filed in
the BTS (and this was sent to the list): https://lists.debian.org/debian-l10n-german/2024/06/msg00021.html

And the overview page has been updated several times already …

    Is there any issue known?

    Greetings

    Helge

    Hmm, I don't think so.

Laura's findings have been like that already, when Helge posted his "Translation status robot not working?" request, and the current status
for SLM is not up-to-date on <https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po-debconf/de>:

The robot status pages like <https://l10n.debian.org/coordination/german/de.by_status.html>
show, there is an open l10n bug for German for the slm package
existing, and this true, so debian.org should tell the same, but it
    does not.

    Hi Camaleón,

    Camaleón <noelamac@gmail.com> wrote (Fri, 28 Jun 2024 15:54:13 +0200):
There is something definilety broken in the stats page, also for Spanish (ES) language:

    BAD / NOT SYNCED
    https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po-debconf/es

    GOOD / SYNCED https://l10n.debian.org/coordination/spanish/es.by_translator.html#Camale%C3%B3n

Why do you think, that status page for Spanish is broken?
I guess it is, because you do not see your bugreport for systemd-boot-installer there, right?
In that case I can say, that this is not a problem with the status page!

systemd-boot-installer is a package belonging to the debian-installer (https://packages.debian.org/sid/systemd-boot-installer), so it's a udeb package, not a normal debian package. And these udeb packages are treated differently when it comes to translations:
the debian-installer has its own infrastructure to deal with translations,
and therefore translators should NOT work on the udeb packages directly
(like you did with your report
"#1074292 [INTL:es] Spanish translation of systemd-boot-installer debconf template"
    https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1074292 ).

To prevent translators to work on those packages directly, I have implemented
a mechanism some time ago, to exclude udeb packages from the above status pages.
Therefore you do not see your report there.
(Yes, I know you found that package there one day, and because of this you worked on it, but that was simply, because I missed to add the new
package to the 'IGNMATERIAL' variable in time; which I then did some days later:
    https://salsa.debian.org/l10n-team/dl10n/-/commit/bdd61bb4cf8fc56ed16aea22f7345c628b76547a

So, systemd-boot-installer appeared on the status pages, and then
    disappeared again.
I know this is not optimal, and it's all fairly complicated in the end :-(

It's quite frustrating (that is, «dis-cou-ra-ging») for translators not getting accurate information on their job and, at least to me, these
kind of «madness things» makes me doing lots of duplicated work and tons
    of errors.

Hmm, reading this makes me think, that the systemd-boot-installer issue
is not your only problem with the status pages?

If it were not because I DO (REALLY REALLY... I mean, «really») LOVE Debian's way of life, and all what it represents (software, people and philosophy) I would have quitted from helping with translations time
    ago >:-P

    Thanks for your time anyway!
I know Debian has its issues, and that often annoys people.
In the end, it always boils down to lack of people and lack of time...

    Hello Camaleón,

I have contributed a litte bit to the translations to german and have
worked on bacula and on slm. As a newcommer I have feared that I might
have messed up something which exceeds the l10-german part.

Well, looking at above packages shows, that this is in most cases not an issue with the status page / webpage:

slm: bugreport closed, translation is included in unstable. But is not shown
    as done in status page.

lyksom-server: there is no such package in the Debian archive. Apparently it has been removed from the archive shortly.

kwartz-client: bugreport closed, translation is included in unstable. But is not shown as done in status page.

    zoph: bugreport still open

    nodm: bugreport still open

Not sure why these templates are not showing in the stats page as
«fully translated (100%)», not sure what I am missing here (?) because
BTS is done but files are not reaching unstable repository¹ or not
    properly synced.

'Your biggest problem' are bugreports, which are still open, which means they are not processed by the package maintainer.
And that in turn means, that your translation did not reached unstable, so
the status page cannot "show it as fully translated", as you say above.
(Those status show, what is currently in unstable !)

For this issue Helge already stated about some maintainers acting not
optimal regarding translation update reports ...
    Sadly!

Thus, it leaves slm and kwartz-client as being not correctly shown on the status page.
For slm I already mentioned in another mail, that there are fatal errors
in the l10n material, which might be the reason for the processing being stopped for slm.

For kwartz-client however I see no reason why that should no be shown
correctly on the status page ... :-(

    So long

Time is scarce, I do understand, but having a bug report with patch available opened for... 2 years? looks a bit overhelming :-)

Yes this occurs. It's quite frustrating. Some non debconf translations
are sitting in the BTS even longer without a single reply by the
    maintainer.

    You know bubuilles metrics? https://i18n.debian.org/nmu-radar/nmu_bypackage.html

I just wonder - couldn't those translations be a job for Debian
janitor? I've no idea what or who powers this, but from the outside it
    looks like a perfect fit.

    Hi all,

some more info on the "Translation status robot not working" topic:

The issue with the spanish file for slm has been fixed in the meantime.
And that is correctly tracked on the status page as well, both on the
robot status page and on the Debian translation status overview:
correct means here, that the file is not 100% translated, since there is still (or again) some work to do; there have been changes to the English original,
    so translation updates are needed.

Another topic was kwartz-client for Spanish:
the bugreport #1065631 filed by Camaleón was processed correctly and closed, but was re-opened by Camaleón, because his assumption was, that something
went wrong with integration of his file; but in fact everything is correct
so far, but there were changes to the English original, so the latest
Spanish po file is not 100% translated and has work for translator again
(the same situation as for slm).
I have closed #1065631 now. For a new translation update a new bugreport
    should be filed.
(The translation status page lists this bug for kwartz-client as open today; this will (should) change in two days, when the next data/page update happens.)

    Moreover, I noticed another topic:
    The two bugs from Christoph
    #1072819 slm: [L10N,DE] slm 0.8.3-3: german translation
#1072820 slm: Issues in slm documentation strings
were still open, but they have in fact been fixed on 16. Jun 2024
    (see https://salsa.debian.org/debian/slm/-/commit/67e270c46ca7b0ae5a47ed4e7bc78d802d40b03a)

But the bugs have not been automatically closed somehow, even if they should. Therefore, I closed them yesterday manually.
And today the latest files for Spanish and German (including the
correct translations and the typos in English reported by Christoph
being fixed) are correctly downloadable via https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po-debconf/es
    respective
    https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po-debconf/de

So, in summary, the translation page seems fine currently, but translators
have work to do again :-)

    Regards
    Holger

Well... let's hope (finally) so and translation page soon reflects the
    job done! :-)

It took some days longer, but now the spanish translation status page is
    fine again.

    In https://lists.debian.org/debian-l10n-german/2024/06/msg00131.html

    Thanks!

So I guess that the fatal error for the de.po file is blocking further processing of that file, so that it does not reach the database for
    the status pages.

    Helge, Christoph:
You should double-check, if the file sent to bug #1074469 is syntax-wise ok (aka: if the above error is fixed in that file), so that this problem gets solved, as soon as the package maintainer includes that file into his package!
Otherwise, you don't get that problem out of the way forever...

I have downloaded the file bacula_13.0.4-3_de.po from https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1074469.
msgfmt -c bacula_13.0.4-3_de.po reports no errors.

Are there additional tests I can run?

    I quote from above:
    Errors:
    gettext: po/de.po:297:70: invalid multibyte sequence
    po/de.po:299:5: invalid multibyte sequence
    po/de.po:1767:25: invalid multibyte sequence
    msgfmt: found 3 fatal errors
The template bacula_13.0.4-3_de.po has just 80 lines.
I do not understand the meaning of the strings as 297:70.
If this are the line numbers and the column numbers, is it possible that
    the issue is within gettext?
The last line of bacula_13.0.4-3_de.po is an empty line. Can this be an
    issue?

    Kind regards,
    Christoph

    Hello Holger,
could you also check the status of the German "bacula" translation?

    In https://lists.debian.org/debian-l10n-german/2024/06/msg00131.html
it was linked to bug 1074469, which is (unfortunately) still open.

On the .org pages it is still listed as untranslated (even though it
also had the previous stages of itt, rfr etc.).

The entry for bacula in https://i18n.debian.org/material/data/unstable.gz is:

That is the po file of the programme. This one is broken, yes, but it
is not maintained by us/in Debian.

I doubt this, as this is a different category, in the e-mail the
    prefix was po-debconf, not po.

I downloaded the file and could not spot any error, except that
    i18nspector told me:
    W: bacula_13.0.4-3_de.po: no-report-msgid-bugs-to-header-field

The only think I could convie is that the file name contains multiple
dots. But this would only be the last straw.

Maybe resending the BTS mail could trigger the entry?

    Greetings

As Helge already wrote, I was apparently wrong here:
The german po file which reports errors is not your file.
So you are fine here, I think.

As I have already mentioned several times:
Using podebconf-display-po is a very good tool for translators of
debconf templates. If you don't know it, you should definitely try it!

    I quote from above:
    Errors:
    gettext: po/de.po:297:70: invalid multibyte sequence
    po/de.po:299:5: invalid multibyte sequence

    the issue is within gettext?

As written above: that's most likely my fault; it's the wrong file we
    are talking about here....

The last line of bacula_13.0.4-3_de.po is an empty line. Can this be an >issue?

    No, that's no problem.
It's the opposite: every (po) file has a newline (an empty line) at the end.
