Hi,

first of all, very sorry for putting you in a rush by resurrecting this task.
We (Italian Team) are working hard on package translations but there are serious
concerns about missing migration for translation files into the Debian archive.
I'm fully aware of the release cycle and totally understand your concern.
Soft freeze is a fact and hard freeze is coming and quickly; stable release doesn't
accept new files...
What can we do to prevent Bullseye from having obsolete translations dated March
2020?
The only missing piece is allowing dak to access the ddtp machine to
retrieve the translations. If I understand it correctly, it just means
creating a user on the machine and adding dak's key.
I have opened RT ticket #8486 in December to ask for that and have not
had an answer yet. I also tried to ping the DSA team on IRC but got no
response either.
Since I was kind of expecting that, I also asked to FTP masters if the
retrieval of translations could be done differently (i.e. publicly
expose the archive so they could download it instead of using rsync).
They told me they preferred rsync for a lot of good reasons, and adding
a user is so fast anyway. Well…
So at this point, I don't know what to do. If anyone was able to
successfully ping the DSA team, it would be greatly appreciated.
We've started this migration journey more than 3 years ago and I'm out
of stamina, to be honest.
Thomas
I think this issue needs to be addressed quite early at this stage of the ongoing
release cycle to make Developers/Maintainers (you, Andrey. Thanks!) able to fix
problems on the route.
Thanks a lot for taking care of this.
We are very close to the end of the journey, giving up at this stage would be a shame.
Your and Andrey work will be lost, all translators work will be lost...
It's worth to make every effort until the last day before the release :)
I've CC'ed DPL. The platform reads [1]:
Reduce bottlenecks that affect our contributors. Gather frequent feedback on what's
holding individuals back from doing what they care about in Debian, and find ways to
reduce that friction. Improve on-line collaboration.
Dear DPL, can you please send a friendly poke to DSAs to help us to finalize the task?
DDTP is a little reality in Debian ecosystem and there are most important projects that
require your attention. I know.
However, all translators are waiting this step since years and we would like to push
our work into the archive for the sake of non-english users which will likely benefit
from having package descriptions in their language.
Thank for considering.

Hi all,
There has been progress since my last e-mail, the ticket I opened is
being processed.
I can't give you an ETA just yet, but I'll let you know as soon as it's
done.

Thanks a lot Thomas and all the others for working on this, and many
thanks for s3v for caring and taking the time to ping on the issue.
As a translator, it is kinda disheartening to see one's work being
useless. So this is great news, I think.
I just wanted to add my voice to let everyone involved know that the
work on this is valued and appreciated.

I'll let you know when this is done.
If you're following the debian-l10n-devel mailing list, you may have
noticed that the error messages from FTP Masters have changed!
This means that dak is now able to connect to trabaci (the machine
hosting ddtp.d.o) and retrieve files.
The error message shows that something failed when checking the files integrity.
We are now investigating this issue.
I'll try to keep you informed as we make progress.
No error message from dak's last two runs, I'm not sure how to interpret that.
Dear DDTP translators, could you please check whether you see your
recent translations on packages.debian.org?
Thanks for all your work.
We crossed the finish line, finally \o/
I'm not on testing/sid but all files are in place [1][2] and everything
seems fine.
(DDTP surprised us in the past so... let's say it in a whisper :) ).
Thanks again!
