It would probably be better to replace Debian's upstream for xletters to
this Unicode-supporting fork than try to patch around this limitation:

Meanwhile, perhaps you could try downloading and building it from source
to see if it works fine for Spanish and report your results on this bug.
Frankly, I haven't given any attention to this package in years, and it
should really be taken over by someone with a greater interest in
packaging software for young children. My youngest turns 14 this year so
is well beyond the age to find xletters interesting. I've CC'd debian-jr
& debian-edu lists to see if there's anyone there willing to pick it up.
If there are no takers, I'll formally orphan the package, as I do agree
Unicode support is badly needed, but that's more work than I'm willing
to put into it.
