• Are these scalable fonts?

From Winston@21:1/5 to All on Mon Mar 7 19:37:16 2016
    Do these XLFDs:

    -adobe-helvetica-bold-o-normal--0-0-100-100-p-0-iso10646-1
    -adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal--0-0-100-100-p-0-iso10646-1
    -adobe-helvetica-medium-o-normal--0-0-100-100-p-0-iso10646-1
    -adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--0-0-100-100-p-0-iso10646-1

indicate scalable fonts? xlsfonts lists them, but I haven't found those
XLFDs in any fonts.scale or even fonts.dir.

    Thanks!

Yes. The Linux X servers handle type1 fonts natively.
They're probably in /usr/share/fonts/Type1 or somewhere like that -
but they should be listed in the fonts.dir there. (They're not in
mine, because my distribution has bitmapped helvetica fonts.)
Or maybe recent servers don't even need a font dir.

Alternatively, you may have a font server (xfs) running, which is picking up Type1 fonts from somewhere and making them available to the X server.
Have a look at your font path.
