    via a right-click on the panel) should be an optional widget. For me it
    just takes up priceless panel space.

    If you click it and choose "lock panels", then it will disappear from
    the panel, albeit that it will still be visible on the desktop itself as
    a tab.

    The one on the desktop can nowadays be disabled, just right lick on the
    desktop (space without widgets) and select from the content menu
    "Desktop Settings", when the window opens, just select the "Tweaks" and
    unclick "Show the desktop toolbox" and then just press on "Apply" button
    and it's gone.
