pkg is telling me that to upgrade protobuf I must
    removed bind916 and protobuf-c.

Sunce bind918 is available I can see adding that instead
but would it disrupt DNS/named if I let the removal happen
    before the addition?

There will be a short disrupt, but is that a problem? DNS is normally redundant, so the other server can answer the queries in that time.

Is it possible for you to use the proper signature delimiter "-- "?

It is a matter of personal principle that since I resent the
inability to quote back and comment on the signatures of others
inflicted by the consequences of that delimiter,I must make my
signoff similarly quotable by others if they are so inclined.

Ok, if you want to annoy people with that signature (the delimiter
causes the news reader to remove the signature when replying), ask
    others to help you.

He tends to ask for a lot of help. And frequently ignores it, so it's a
    waste of time anyway.

(It's not a matter of wanting to annoy people, but of granting
them the right to point to it and say it annoys them, and wanting
the right to do the same to theirs, and the same for exchanges of
    praise).
