    I have just seen the news that John Conway has died at the age of 82.

    I attended a talk he gave at Trinity College Cambridge in the 1970s. His enthusiasm for recreational mathematics was inspiring.

    Without him I would never have realised how much complexity can arise
    from such simple rules.
