• Can insects ruin a hardware terminal like VT520?

From Johann 'Myrkraverk' Oskarsson@21:1/5 to All on Wed Dec 20 19:53:10 2017
    Hi,

I believe I've seen an insect crawl into my terminal, a VT520. Is
it possible it'll hurt my terminal somehow? For the moment it's turned
off and will remain so for some time to come.

When turned on I suppose it's possible they could create a short and
    damage something.

I tried to open it up, and see if I can clean any possible infestation
out, but I don't know how. I could remove the rotating stand the CRT
sits on, and there are two plastic push-in locks below the visible part
of the monitor, but it doesn't come off easy; so I gave up.

Is there an informal repair guide out there? I didn't find any with a
    quick internet search.

That is known as a bug.

As others have mentioned, bugs can short out components on subsequent
    power up.

I've heard of larger animals (usually rodents) leaving various deposits.
Some of which can be bad for electronics, particularly the ammonia
    compounds.

Nesting material can also build up and cause shorting issues.

An accumulation of Lisp parentheses is generally harmless, though.

I don't speak Lisp, so I'm not sure, but I would expect that the
    parentheses need to be balanced.

I would expect an imbalance of parentheses to cause some sort of
    (syntax?) problem.
