I have changed all kinds of settings in putty to try and get this working but have had no success.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Maybe they pressed the "Alt" key (it stays active even after releasing it). They would need to press alt again to unlock it. It happened to me with putty and other windows too. The shared keyboard gets pretty messy.
