• DEC VT LAN40 Terminal

From AB@21:1/5 to All on Sat Aug 24 07:35:08 2019
Hello - I wonder if there's anyone out there who knows how to get a VT LAN40 back into service?

The machine was last operated about 5 years ago and seemed just fine. I replaced the CR2032 and CR1220 batteries.

It displays this message, for what appears to be forever:

Self Test in progress - please wait...

    Any suggestions appreciated!
    thanks
    Andy

If this is what I think it is, the next step after this is to boot a version
of Microsoft Windows out of rom. I don't remember if it actually runs it directly from rom or bootloads it from an external rom bank into ram, but either way it's failing.

I would check the rom bank and make sure everything is seated properly and
I would check all the decoupling capacitors in-circuit with an ESR meter.

These things... they aren't like regular terminals, they are rather weird embedded hybrid things. But there may be documentation available out there
for them. If you can get the service docs you may have a good chance.

thanks! - yes a service manual would be AWESOME but my simple google skills are not finding anything...

I have tried removing everything I can find, reseated the ICs which are plug-ins, but no other luck. I wish there was a way to get to the BIOS config - I've tried all sorts of combinations....

thanks, but sadly no "behind the scenes" info - just advises for every scenario to contact service rep for problems. Hoping there is a BIOS set code or sequence... maybe I can set the defaults or something... :-)

There is no BIOS... this does not boot anything at all like a PC. There
may be some key sequence you can give it that will give you some information about the boot process, but you'll need the service manual for that.

The guys at bitsavers are the first people I'd ask, also the people on comp.sys.dec.
