• Airdrop PDF to iPhone

From JF Mezei@21:1/5 to All on Mon Nov 8 23:10:52 2021
    High Sierra Mac
    iPhone with IOS 14.something.

Mac WiFi enabled. Bluetooth enabled on both.
I send image files on my Mac to the iPhone file. Since I accept all
request, I have just the ding, no dialogue and the photo is available in "Photos".

But no matter how hard I try, it won't transfer PDF files. I get the
ding on the phone, but on the Mac, a indication of failure.
(I use Finder -> Go -> Airdrop to open an airdrop window, then the
iPhone appears, I clock on it, then drag some file over it.

Why does it work perfectly for photos but not PDF files?

Québec issued new vaccine passport so we can travel to USA (eeded more
info on them) and wanted to have PDF copy on my iPhgone on top of the
app itself, and in the end, had to email the PDFs and then move then to
    Files.

I tried Googling, but there are no answers on this, despite many raising
issue. Apple just points to basic instructions without dealing why PDFs
don't work when the rest works.

    Any hints?

I have no issues dropping pdf's from my Macs to my iPhone and from there
into Files / some folder (just tested again with a small pdf and my QC
    vaccine cert).

You could also open a note on your mac and it should appear in Notes on
    your iPhone.

You could also use the Quebec VaxiCode app which displays it partially
(name only) or with full details (DOB and specific vaccines).

You can also upload to your wallet via the Health app - but the Wallet
display of the QR code is pretty small - not sure how well it will scan
    - haven't had a chance to test it.

So check your settings. As usual.

And print your QR to paper and keep it in a safe place in your bags.

I have kept imap notes, so text only. I can use email or Messages (to

    if it worked.

Yes, I have that. But to load it on vaicode, you need to display the QR
code on your computer and aim phone's camera at it. My goal is to stop another copy as a PDF (the original) as backup.

You can also upload to your wallet via the Health app

Wasn't aware of that. Will have to look up how it's done. Is that IOS
    15 only?

The international vaccine certificate from Québec has larger QR code in
    the PDF.

You can always get a copy from the government web site.

I just sent a PDF from my phone to my Mac with no issue. It is rare that
I send PDFs, since normally they get downloaded into a folder on my
iCloud drive, but I do send other files via aridrop all the time.

Why does it work perfectly for photos but not PDF files?

No idea. A workaround might be to send the file to yourself in Messages
or do what I do and save the file in iCloud drive.

Québec issued new vaccine passport so we can travel to USA (eeded more

Because PDFs DO work just fine, as do all other files I've tried. This
is a problem YOU are having, not a problem with iOS.

Does Quebec offer the same Apple Wallet/ Health app for a digital/QR code Vaccine certificate as we have in California?

Here is how it shows in the Apple Wallet: <https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-FpnxmL8/0/e04f7016/X3/i-FpnxmL8-X3.jpg>

Since the original is a .PDF, it is always good to have the "original"

who is in Europe and was able to get a france "passe sanitaire" (covid passport) from his original PDF file of his ontario vaccination.

When I updated the VAxiCode app recently, it warned me about my old
passpord needing an update. Hence the process of getting new copy from
the QC web site and reloading it in to the add (and trying to update the
PDF copy I keep as backup).

Still no explanation on what Max->iPhone refuses to work for PDF.
Curoius on the process that allows .JPG to pass through without problem,
    but not PDF.

Since I can save email attachement to the "Downlaods" folder of "Files" application, I would have expected Airdrop to work fine for .pdf.

Would have appreciated hints on how to debug something which doesn't
work for me instead of just being told "it works" by others. But I guess
that is too much to ask from this group.

Yep. So I'm curious to know if an app can scan that and get the code
properly. (Doesn't matter, the Quebec app shows it larger as does Notes).

Indeed, why dropping the original into Notes would solve it nicely, but
as usual you have to make life hard for yourself by limiting

Our systems work fine as designed. You want us to figure out how to
cripple our systems to mimic your problem?

I told you to review your settings (this would apply for both machines
of course). You say you've wounded your Mac so that you can't use Notes
to drop images or .pdf's into it for some bizarre and needless reason.
Why don't you configure your system with the year 2021 in mind?

... and do, always, bring a paper copy.

I don't know if it's the same app, but it is SMART compliant which seems
to be the dominant format. The same app was not SMART compliant until
    late August-ish.

So you had to update the app and DL the up-to-date QR code from Santé
    Québec.

As I understand it US customs is not checking everyone's code. They
take your word and random check from time to time.

The penalty for lying to US customs officers is being barred from the US permanently-ish. Getting that lifted is a bear and will take years.

Well I have to admit, you do seem to come up with problems no one else has
    ran into.

Only wild ass guess I have:

If you are using Little Snitch on the mac, disable it.
If you are using the built in mac firewall, disable it.
If you are using VPN software on either the mac or iphone, disable it.
If you are using ad blockers on either the mac or iphone, disable it.

I get the feeling this some kind of weird networking problem over a file
type issue, but don't ask me why. Crystal ball guess.

Anyway, since I have the same setup available:

    High Sierra Mac
    iPhone with IOS 14.something.

All I can say is, it works fine for me too, either .jpg or .pdf.

All I can say is, it works fine for me too, either .jpg or .pdf.

Unpossible! JF has repeatedly said that the feature does not work with
    PDFs!

It does not workd FOR ME and asked what to check. I know it works for
    most,

Really? Because you falt out asked on multiple occasions why AirDrop did
not work with PDFs. There was no mention anywhere of "for you" and you
made the statement several times, showing that you certainly were at the
very least trying to imply that it was a general problem, not one
    specific to you.

You have many problems that others do not have. You also have documented
many times the great lengths that you will go to to break things, mangle things, and fuck things up. That probably explains why you have so many
issues no one else has in the first place.

For example, the final release of iPhoto was almost *SEVEN YEARS AGO*
(8- months ago there was a minor update, the last real release was, of
course, even longer ago) and you you insist on using it.

but also know that many have posted problems about inability to

    "many" Riiiiiight.

Update: This week, I updated to IOS 15.1 from 14.8.

Airdrop a PDF file from Mac (High Sierra) to my iPhone now works and I
get dialoguue on iPhone asking me which app to use to open the PDF.
(There is Books, Chrome, Zipbrowser, one I forgot and Files as options).

Interestingly for .jpg , it goes to Photos automatically without a prompt.

Were you able to save it to a folder under Files?

Does Quebec offer the same Apple Wallet/ Health app for a digital/QR code Vaccine certificate as we have in California?

Here is how it shows in the Apple Wallet: <https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-FpnxmL8/0/e04f7016/X3/i-FpnxmL8-X3.jpg>

...and some of how the detail is shown in the Health App: <https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-5xSH25V/0/ef129a74/X3/i-5xSH25V-X3.jpg>

Just tested the Quebec verification app (VaxiCode Verif) against the QR
code shown in Wallet on the Watch. First issue is the watch looks very
bright to the app so the contrast is low; second issue is the focus
distance / size. You have to move so the QR "credential" is larger than
the "target" frame of the app on the iPhone. Then it gets it. Slow
process v. presenting the iPhone fulls size doc in the "VaciCode" app or
    in Notes (Pdf).
