• Install Big Sur 11.6-- or Wait a Bit?

From Wade Garrett@21:1/5 to All on Tue Sep 21 13:33:45 2021
Got a "software update" system message to install Big Sur 11.6 on my Mac running 11.5.2 .

I think it's been out about a week now. Safe to install now- or better
to wait for 11.6.1 or 11.6.2?

I'm always of the opinion that if you don't have a problem, waiting a
bit longer is probably a good idea.

If you´ve got an M1 Mac and want to watch DVDs better wait.
After the update the DVD Player no longer works with my M1 mini.
(And nope, it´s not the hardware or a particular DVD. Both work fine on an Intel Mac).

How do you figure? I use a lot of the more modern stuff. System Services and Quick Actions are two excellent features. Little touches like snapping windows is something I use a lot, and full screen / Spaces. Mac OS 7.5 did not have a Dock or other similar launcher...

If you want to get a look back at Mac OS System 7 here is an online emulator:

    http://jamesfriend.com.au/pce-js/pce-js-apps/

There is a lot which Apple had already done there, but we have come a long way (and taken a few steps backward). Heck, back in that era menus did not even stay down unless you held the mouse, you could neither Hide nor Minimize apps, etc.

OK. If that is what you get from it that is fine. I cannot remember which updates came with Catalina off hand, but I think that is when they *finally* got rid of iTunes and the bloat it was. They added more window management but
I use Moom which does what macOS does (mostly) and more. Really though not
sure what else I really found with the UI.

Oh, the System Services were in the same order in the app menu and the right click menu. Never made any sense for them not to be!

Well, WTH. I did a Time Machine backup, d/l and installed.

As it installed after the restart, I got a black screen with the white
Apple logo and progress bar underneath. The bar advanced slowly, the
screen then blacked out and the progress bar restarted and advanced a
    little further.

Must have repeated this loop 10-12 times with small incremental progress
bar advances. I don't recall previous OS updates going through this many
    cycles to install.

Finally got done, all seems OK.

All software will always have issues, but version X.0 usually has more
of them. Part of the reason is the ridiculous new method to release a
new version (and new hardware) every year, which means everything these
days is rushed out rather than properly tested. :-(

Still on iPadOS/iOS 14.7.1 here. No way am I installing 15.0.0. Maybe around 15.1.2.

Your loss. But no one cares what YOU do, but claiming it is some sort
of virtue to wait is not just silly, but also completely wrong.

I will NEVER understand what the “X.0.0 was released today, I have to install this NOW” is. Let others be the unpaid testers. I have better things to do.

Millions of people have been testing iOS 15 for many months. There are
features in the new versions that people want and will use and will be
of significant benefit to them, why should they wait?

It is ALWAYS better to wait for the X.X.1 or X.X.2 version. Or even later.
Any software. The initial X.0.0 will ALWAYS have issues.

All software will always have issues, but version X.0 usually has more
of them. Part of the reason is the ridiculous new method to release a
new version (and new hardware) every year, which means everything these
days is rushed out rather than properly tested. :-(

It's annoying. I wished Apple and other companies would stop doing that.

If you´ve got an M1 Mac and want to watch DVDs better wait.
After the update the DVD Player no longer works with my M1 mini.
(And nope, it´s not the hardware or a particular DVD. Both work fine on an Intel Mac).

    Hey Bernd--

Love your EagleData Mac database program!

I second that, I've used it for many years to keep up with my 1200 DVD
    library.

It's pretty cool to be confident you're always watching the movie you
haven't seen in the longest amount of time.

The same program (v. 0.37) runs fine on both my Tiger 10.4 and El
Capitan 10.11.6 systems, wish all apps behaved like that.

    Thanks for the praise guys.

0.37 is pretty old, but as they say: "never change a running system" :-)

The current version is 0.72 and runs on Big Sur (you just have to push it through gatekeeper...)

I update as soon as I can see the button to click :-)-O and have only
been burned one single time when they messed up the virtualization or
whatever Virtual Box uses and it ran out of memory all the time.

I need that for the practice software [1], but figured out a way around it until they fixed it.

Can not recall any other issues.

What is really annoying, though, is that they need 2GB to fix one or a
    few issues.

    Each time.

Times 4 laptops for the family (and practice) and three desktops, in a developing country...

The Combo Updates of times past were still large but you only needed one
    and a stick.

For the iDevices it's less annoying, because smaller sizes and we do not
have the same device twice so we'd need to download them anyway.
