When it is released in "the fall", Ventura will mean the dropping of
support for some older Mac computers that were supported in the current
Mac OS Mavericks. There's a list of which devices can run Apple's

Why single out MacOS for ridiculously silly and meaningless names. :-(

Well at least they dropped the rumoured “Mammoth” name! You can still
call it macOS 13 anyway if you don’t like named OS’s.

Why in the world are you bringing up Mavericks?

    It's 8 versions from current.

People can personally call it whatever they want*, but everywhere else

Yet, there are others who are glad they use code names and not the old numbering system. People are different in their knowledge and
understanding of many things, including computers. As an occasional Mac
User Group presenter, user educator, and a support technician (multi
platform), I am always aware of this. If your understanding is on the
Pro level, it doesn't matter. If you dealt with as many different
platforms and operating systems with many end users, as some of us here
do on a regular basis, you would understand this.

It's "MacOS Hyperball" newer than "MacOS Wonderorb" ... who knows,
without memorising the entire list, but *EVERYONE* (barring those with
number dyslexia) can very quickly and easily understand that "MacOS 18"
    is newer than "MacOS 15".

Using codenames is utterly ridiculous and incomprehsnibly stupid, even
more so when it's only MacOS that does so out of all of Apple's various operating systems.

Apple aren't the only ones of course. Google stupidly uses codenames
for their Android releases too, but most companies have enough sense to
use numbers for the public even if they use codenames internally.

When I look at About This Mac it gives me a number right below the name. Its not like they don't have numbers.

I like the names I think they're cool. But I wish they had called this one Mammoth, I think Mammoth Mountain is a lot prettier than Ventura!

Simple understanability should always be the founding cornerstone of
    any product.

It's the same with the idiocy in New Zeland where important
announcements keep being sprinkled with Maori words - very few people understand Maori and they are only put in to appease the "Politically
Correct" nutters, at the expense of being easily understood.

When I look at About This Mac it gives me a number right below the name.

Yes, in smaller font to make it seem less important ... when in reality
    it is far more important.

Its not like they don't have numbers.

Yes, they do have version numbers as well, but few people in magazines,
news articles, etc. use them. Even Apple's own website page for the new
MacOS doesn't mention the version number at all, not even in the small
print legalese at the bottom of the page.

I like the names I think they're cool. But I wish they had called this

More like "MacOS iOS" . :-(
