• iCloud Drive "disappears" - or not quite

From Alan Browne@21:1/5 to All on Wed Jun 1 15:28:30 2022
In finder, an oft used Sidebar item is "iCloud Drive". I'm fairly
dependent on this function for mobility purposes incl. some work items.

At some point today (or maybe yesterday) it disappeared from the Finder Sidebar. Strange.

So I went to my user folder to find ... it not there[1]. There were
some old archive copies. Hidden? Nope. [don't reply w/o reading note
    [1] first].

I checked the iCloud settings in prefs. No apparent issue.

This got me a bit worried. I searched for a known file that is in
iCloud and ... there it was. Used "show in enclosing folder" and it
showed all the current files that I expected. But no means to get that
    onto the Sidebar again.

    Tried:
    -re-launching Finder.
-Disconnecting iCloud Drive in iCloud prefs, and back in (creating
    new local archives of
    iCloud Drive along the way).
    -re-booting [2]

-and finally logging completely out of iCloud, and back in and voila,
the drive re-appeared in the Sidebar and re-filled from the cloud
    side over next couple minutes.

Anyway - never seen anything like this before. That drive has been
setup since 2013 - possibly earlier - and syncs with my work MBA and
    other personal devices.

Solved, or rather fixed. - but weird.

[1] After writing all of the above, I realized that iCloud Drive is not
in the top level of the user folder, but instead resides at:
    /Users/username/Library/Mobile Documents
So, unless this happens again I won't get to check if that folder was
intact - but it makes sense that it was since I could find those files indirectly with a filename search in Finder, then "Show in enclosing
    folder".
In any case, even had I found it, not sure how I would have made the
link in the sidebar. (Create a favourite linked to any file and then
edit that in Get Info perhaps?).

[2] (after making a manual external drive copy of the indirectly found
    folder contents)
