My HP 27" 27xi monitor was ok given that it maxed out at 1920x1080 that matched the HP laptop I have.
The MacBook at 3456x2234 looks ok on the current monitor but could look a LOT better with an update.
I'm thinking that a 27" 16:9 aspect ratio 3480x2160 res 60 Hertz 4K monitor in the $350-400 range would work well for my purposes. A thin bezel would also be desirable.
Looking around on a few sites, including Amazon, there is a wide range of choices. Brands (Amazon consumer ratings) include Dell (4.0), LG (4.5), Philips (4.5), Samsung (3.5-4.5 depending on model), HP (4.5), and Viewsonic(4.5).
Two questions:
Are there other performance metrics that make a difference?
Any brands that are either better or worse than the ratings indicate?

My old Dell 32inch monitor works great. So assume a 27 would to. You
can expect to pay more for Dell excellence though.

Thanks for the input. I would not have looked at Dell but on their site
is a 27" S2721QS that meets all my specs and needs, has good reviews
from some Mac owners, and is at the LOW end of the price range at $320.
And, it also has speakers and thinner bezels than others, not required but nice.

Thanks for the input. I would not have looked at Dell but on their siteI picked up a used Apple LED Cinema Display some years back…built in camera, speakers, mic & USB hub is a nice combo.

Looks like one can still find them around…
< https://www.macofalltrades.com/apple-led-thunderbolt-display-27-inch-mc914ll-a-good-condition/?setCurrencyId=1&radscid=1718476731&gclid=Cj0KCQiA4b2MBhD2ARIsAIrcB-T_G0IiGuMEaDOd3qYdtmBfvemZdjuEDebWqypFIsn5p4lw3z1MCSYaAruREALw_wcB>
..but they’re now getting fiarly old and they’re lower resolution (2560x1440),
but still might be worth a look, of for nothing else as a decent benchmark for
what should be the minimums in a new display. For the higher price points, the
current displays on Apple’s website are the LG 24” 4K for $700 and LG 27” 5K
for $1300…but likely overkill when the use case is not doing serious photography..
