• Hey Mac fans, need some advice

From Thomas E.@21:1/5 to All on Thu Oct 21 14:00:48 2021
Apple has admitted that sacrificing the functionality of onboard HDMI and SD card ports for "thin and light" laptops was a mistake. Apple also took away that silly Touch Bar and put F keys back where they belong. The new Macs are also thicker and heavier
than their predecessors. All good, and vindicates may past criticisms. I also love the Mac's touchpad and touch ID will be very nice too. I might also be able to ditch Office and use Apple's apps. Excel might be a show-stopper there.

    See: https://www.theverge.com/22734645/apple-macbook-pro-2021-ports-magsafe-touch-bar-usb-c-future

My only other significant issue has been the lack of a laptop numeric keypad. Despite that niggling item I'm thinking about buying a Mac. Why? CPU/GPU performance, screen quality and Apple's support program. I'm ticked off that MS is not supporting W11
for my 4 year old HP Gen 7 Intel processor. And, I have a near-six figure RMD coming next year from our 5 tax deferred retirement accounts. :)

Finally, and not a major item, the high school where I am teaching is an Apple shop.

    So here are my questions:

Is Thunderbolt fully compatible with all USB C devices? I have 2 USB hard drives, a DVD drive, and wireless Logitech USB keyboard and mouse. Also 2 Wireless HP printers.

I am assuming that my 4 year old HP 27xi monitor will work via HDMI. Any known issues with HP monitors?

It is claimed that Parallels Desktop 17 will run Windows 11. Any personal experience with that? Do I have to buy a Windows license?

If I run both Mac and Windows on the laptop is 1tb enough space. My current 1 Tb Windows machine, including data files, is 50% full. Much of the data will migrate to Mac OS, so I assume it's not an issue.

I have checked all my key Windows software for Mac OS versions and no show-stoppers there.

Here is the config being considered:

Would you go for the 14" or 16" model? I'm leaning toward the 16". It has about the same screen area as my 15" HP and will fit in my existing carrying case.

    16" M1 Pro

    10-Core CPU
    16-Core GPU
    16GB Unified Memory
    1TB SSD Storage¹
    16-core Neural Engine
    16-inch Liquid Retina XDR display
Three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI port, SDXC card slot, MagSafe 3 port
    Magic Keyboard with Touch ID
    Force Touch trackpad
    140W USB-C Power Adapter

    Thoughts on that?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hard drive space - will it be enough if I have both Mac OS and Windows installed?

Buy a keyboard w/keypad for your dock setup. Or if you want mobility. there’s wired or Bluetooth wireless keypad accessories:

Facts about Steve "Steven Petruzzellis" Carroll

Steve "Steven Petruzzellis" Carroll turned 60 years old back on August
29, 2018 and yet is still single, broke and yet with his skills he has
nothing to show for it but flooding Usenet. He blames BoaterDave for his
loss of his wife and girlfriend and his begging of older women to sleep
    with him <http://web.archive.org/web/20140820220648/http://www.seniorpeoplemeet.com/v3/externalsearch/singles?Profile=1AE1BDAAFC6D6F08ACA0C235BB8ED21D&Username=STEVECARROL>.
Steven is jealous of what BoaterDave has and in a narcissistic rage repeatedly works to take it away from him. For over 15 years he has failed at even
this. Steve "Steven Petruzzellis" Carroll is an utter failure in life.

Of his online life Steven says

I've been booted off by past providers before because people
complain about me and all my bullshit. I don't want to lose my ISP
*again* but I still need my army of sock puppets so I continually
search usenet for whatever servers I haven't yet been booted
    from.

Some examples where Steven has been booted

X10 Hosting booted Steven for inappropriate activity
    http://tinyurl.com/z92qmz4

Comcast booted Steven for inappropriate activity
    http://tinyurl.com/h75nh9l

FreeHostingEU booted Steven for copyright infringement http://devsite.eu.pn

AwardSpace (atwebpages.com) booted Steven for breaking terms of service http://demsites.atwebpages.com/pokeman

Imgur took down an image for breaking terms of service http://imgur.com/yv2XppE

Had a GigaNews account which was removed for harassing BoaterDave

Stopped posting from his fretwizzen Google account since shortly after
I complained. Seems he lost that too.

His wife booted Steven to the curb for cheating on her

Only site Steven Petruzzellis has pointed to that has ever been available http://web.archive.org/web/20161019062351/http://www.oldneighborhoodrestaurant.net/
    https://goo.gl/DMno6J

Made by the Go Daddy Website builder and is utter crap. Later he denied
he said he was merely taking credit for someone else's work but Steven
is the contact person http://tinyurl.com/hcw6dul http://web.archive.org/web/20161202192456/http://www.reservationdiary.eu/eng/reservation/d76d1156-

He also bragged he was working on an update and showed it here https://youtu.be/hYQ4Tg0r0g0

    The business still failed.

He likely went to the Go Daddy Website Builder after he failed to get WordPress installed.

    https://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic/13879

This is why Steve "Steven Petruzzellis" Carroll attacks BoaterDave.

Steven Petruzzellis was divorced on June 22 , 2012 at the Golden Municipal Court House because his wife caught him screwing another woman.

BoaterDave is married and by all appearances happily so.
He never complains about his wife in COLA.

Steven Petruzzellis is living on charity of a friend in a single room.

BoaterDave does not live in a mansion or even a high end home but has
    a house and a yard.

Steven Petruzzellis has two kids but no respect. He repeatedly called
Ryan his "little screwup" and refers to his son Steve as a "dick" and worse. He says at least one of them likely hacked his computer and is a "mentally deficient child." He mocks his possible future daughter-in-law as someone
who takes too many selfies and is focused only on herself

BoaterDave has two kids (or more) and never speaks poorly of them in public.

No reason to think they are not a happy family.

Steven Petruzzellis claims to be a stay at home dad who pays thousands
of dollars for day care. Steven has no job and no purpose in life. Steven
has given up and now seeks a mother-figure to date.

BoaterDave has his own business doing technical work and also teaches.

BoaterDave offers a true contribution to society.
    Teachers are truly under appreciated.

If I run both Mac and Windows on the laptop is 1tb enough space. My current 1 Tb Windows machine, including data files, is 50% full. Much of the data will migrate to Mac OS, so I assume it's not an issue.

And yet you're asking questions with obvious answers.

Serious and sincere answers only please.

Windows 11 - I have a Windows license for my HP. Can I use that?
It depends on what kind of MS license you have now.
You deflect my serious question about USB with a sarcastic remark about my printers?
Do your own homework? That's an answer?
What kind of USB cable do you think a *wireless* printer uses?

Hard drive space - will it be enough if I have both Mac OS and Windows installed?
Both OS’s will easily fit within 1TB, but once again, it depends on just what all you want installed in addition to the OS.

The wireless HP printers - I could have explained that better. I'm assuming that they work fine on a Mac - that the drivers are available. It appears it works. I was looking for personal experience.

Excel - lack of VB macros in Numbers is a serious issue for me. I don't use Access. So I'm stuck with needing an Office license. I have 3 instances left on my license, I could have both the Apple and Windows versions.

I have Windows 11 running on my 2015 Intel iMac through Parallels
    17.1.   Works fine.

For a Mac using the M1 processor I think Windows ARM version is
needed.   Do not even know if there is a Win 11 ARM version.

And checking would have been SO DIFFICULT!

You need a Win 11 or earlier Win version Serial Number to input into
the Parallels installer. I used a Win 10 number and it worked fine.

Says exactly what I said. You need a Windows ARM version.

There is no Win 11 ARM version released yet.  It is still in

    Yes. To provide a LINK.

I knew that Microsoft was producing a version of Windows for ARM already.
