• Invalid path in RISC OS 6.20?

From David Higton@21:1/5 to All on Tue Oct 5 16:28:59 2021
A couple of people have reported that one of the paths in RISC OS 6.20
is invalid (it begins with a dot).

Could everyone still running 6.20 please issue the following command:

    *Show InetDBase*

and tell me what it reports? Also the platform (hardware or emulation).

Extra brownie points to anyone who can tell me /where/ InetDBase$Write
is defined, and its definition. I think it must be <something_in_angle_brackets>.Internet.Files and whatever is in the
    angle brackets is undefined.

Thanks in advance to all who respond!

    Hallo David,

my Kinetic-RPC with RISC OS 6.20 creates the following output:
    InetDBase$Path : Choices:Internet.Files.
    InetDBase$Write : .Internet.Files

Sorry, but couldn't earn me the extra brownie points :-( ...

    Greetings,
    Juergen

Interesting! You are the only person to report a proper path for InetDBase$Path. All the others (amittedly there haven't been many)
have reported a path that begins with a dot, and that therefore cannot
    possibly be valid.

    I think I have a solid work-round, though.

    Thanks to everybody who replied.

    Excellent David.

I was interested in Elwyn's results as all the emulator tests I'd done
with 6.20 came up with the invalid path.

Today I was using my really old (1975)real hardware SARPC also running
RISC OS 6.20 so I thought I'd see...

Did the *Show inetdbase* and it also displayed the invalid path.

Whoops! I noticed a date error...

"Today I was using my really old (1975)real hardware SARPC..."

Which obviously should read 1995 :-/

As we are discussing Virtual RISC OS...

I thought the question was related to RO 6.20 ?

I could well be wrong,(Nb.) but something about Elwyn's result bothered me.

    *Show
On *all* my Virtual RISC OS installs, Various flavours of, VRPC-AdjustSA, VRPC-DL or RPCEmu, no paths are referenced as ADFS::HardDisc4.anything...

On all my virtual installs it is "HostFS::HardDisc4.anything..."

Remember VRPC should not be using the internet configuration at all since
it all handed over to the underlying Windows Internet 'stack'

Whereas on the Real hardware SARPC 6.02 it is ADFS::HardDisc4.anything...

That would be correct I would think.

I leave others to comment on my query.

    Dave

(Nb.) I have a nag from the past about something to do with ADFS and VRPC
but I can't resolve it in my minds eye?

VRPC can have a ADFS 'partition' (really a large 50Mb Zip file IIRC) if
needed for specific programs that would not work on HostFS.

If you could type in at the F12 star prompt, pressing the Return key after
    each line:

    Show { > &.list }
    and
    SetType &.list Text

respecting all the spaces within that text, it will save onto the root directory of your HD a text file called "list".

If you drop that into a News posting it'll give us some info which might be useful in helping to find out what's going on.

After that you can just delete the file.

Well done! I don't know if it will help - someone needs to compare it with
one from a "broken" version, but well done for following my rather scant instructions - and I'm not being in any way condescending!

The pitfalls were many in doing that successfully - and I wasn't joking
about the importance of the spacing!

    So thank you again!

    Best wishes,

Interesting! You are the only person to report a proper path for InetDBase$Path. All the others (amittedly there haven't been many)
have reported a path that begins with a dot, and that therefore cannot possibly be valid.

That was InetDBase$Write, not InetDBase$Path. And Elwyn's machine
    doesn't even have $Write.
I'm not so sure it's RO 6.20, certainly not after his Show listing. It
looks more like an early RO 4.2x.

Interesting observation, it prompted me to do some checking through my
various installs and their *Show results.

I think it is RISC OS 4.39 or 6.20, but it's run on a Hardware RISC OS
machine like maybe a RiscPC but not a virtual version...

I've also compared it with the *Show from my old 6.20 SARPC, and the ADFS
paths etc, make it appear to be so as their structure is very similar.

The structure of Virtual RISC OS *Show is notably different to the SARPC
    *Show structure.

Curious. I would not have expected a difference hardware vs virtual.

Do any of your 6.20s have an InetDBase$Path with a canonicalised path?

Mine (4.39 or 6.20 on RPCEmu) is:
    InetDBase$Path : Choices:Internet.Files.

    Elwyn's:
    InetDBase$Path : ADFS::HardDisc4.$.!BOOT.Resources.!Internet.files.

There are more variables different that way. To me that looked like an
older setup. But I now see his Boot$OSVersion variable claims it's 620.

Still odd there's no InetDBase$Write on his system though.

And looking further, it seems that it's his Resources$Dir which may give
this result as this corresponds to the "missing bit" in the "faulty"
versions, so as a first guess it is this that hasn't yet been set and is consequently null when the "faulty" path is set on the other versions!

That is, InetDBase* variables are attempting to be set using
<Resources$Dir> before it itself has been set, thus giving a null value in
    the paths.

Do these 6.20 installations not use the standard universal boot in order to
get the extra "user" dependent bits, and why does Elwyn's work and other peoples' don't?

I, as usual, reserve the right to be talking rubbish!

Yes; there appears to be a way to avoid altogether using the defective
    path.

I've got to remove all the test hooks from my rewritten app, then any interested volunteers can test it.

There's a Catch-22. The file in question is only available via https,
/not/ http. Attempting to get it via http results in a "301 Moved
Permanently" message, giving the https URL.

The Catch-22 is that curl requires the CertData file to exist (and to
be sufficiently up to date, though I have no idea what the limiting
date would be), otherwise you can't get it via https.

So my app will allow anyone to update their existing CertData file,
but not to go get it if they don't already have one (or a working one).
And I don't think it's the fault of my app as such.

NetSurf will get it (because NS has its own copy of the CertData file,
although the NS team appears to have some difficulty keeping their
distribution up to date), so the best my app can do is to point out
how to get an up to date CertData file and where to put it when you've
got it. And this copy will eventually be used by NetSurf too, in
preference to its own copy, if what the NS team has said comes to pass.

Can that. I've learned that curl can do an https fetch even if the
CertData file doesn't exist - it simply can't check that the site is
    valid.

So I'm another step closer to having the app working.
