• Task Display

From Chris Newman@21:1/5 to All on Sat Aug 14 16:39:50 2021
    Hi,

    Raspberry Pi4 RISC OS 5.28

I've been getting some Buffer Overflow error messages so I thought I'd investigate memory allocation.

I went to usual Task Manager far right of icon bar but it doesn't list
Task Display, only Info, Configure, Task Window & Shutdown.

    Surely, this isn't normal.

Have you just tried clicking (select - Left mouse button) on Task manager.

That's it. I was still in RiscOS 4 mode. Thanks to you and Chris.

Now, why am I getting Buffer Overflow.........?????

RO4.39 (and I suspect many predecessors) also used Select for Task
    Display..
I suspect RO5 removed it from the menu because it was duplicated.

Now, why am I getting Buffer Overflow.........?????

    Good luck!

    What!
Clicking either Select or Adjust here in RISC OS 5.29 brings up the Task display. So that's one wasted button.

At least in RISC OS other side versions, clicking Select brings up Tasks
while Adjust brings up Configuration... Very useful.

Yes I know it's in the 5.29 switcher menu, but why remove it from the
mouse click when now the mouse click adjust only repeats what select is
    doing.

Adjust does nothing on the Switcher icon by default in RO5, doesn't it?

AFAIK it's not a case of "remove"; Adjust has never opened Configure in RO5. That was added some time after ROL started fiddling with their branch of the
    OS post-Acorn.

It does here on my RISC OS 5.29 I've just checked again twice.

Clicking the Select mouse button with the pointer on the switcher brings forth the Tasks display.

    Close the Tasks window...

Clicking the Adjust mouse button with the pointer on the switcher brings forth the Tasks window.

I'm pretty sure clicking on the switcher with either Select or Adjust
has always opened the task display back all the way to RISC OS 3.1...
but I've had a Director filter on the Adjust-click since RISC OS 3.1
which opens a menu of current windows instead. :-)

(Which suggests that it has always been considered a 'spare' click,
since if it did anything useful Director wouldn't have overridden it by
default - it would have used a modifier key of some sort.)

That's correct unless you have the very nice utility, Tamarc from Fred
Graute which enables the Adjust button to display the Configuration
window. This is the default setting but a Command obeyfile in Boot.Choices.Tamarc can be edited to enable CTRL, Shift and Alt keys to
perform other actions. Left-Control Adjust-click on mine displays the TaskWindow although to be honest its no quicker than pressing CTRL-F12.

I use it on ARMX6 (RISC OS 5.29) and RPi (RISC OS 5.28) since Fred
    created it back in 2018.
