• Printers 1.89

From Dave@21:1/5 to All on Wed Oct 5 09:41:38 2022
    G'day folks.
Printers 1.89 (28 Feb 18) being the version used (I think) on RISC OS 5.28 installs.

Does anyone know if this version of Printers will run on a VRPC running
    RISC OS 6.20?

    Thanks
    Dave

I am currently using Printers 1.90 (available from ROOL or via Packman)

Does anyone know if this version of Printers will run on a VRPC running

Interesting question, I now rearly use my VRPC installs instead tend to
    use the RPCEmu ones.

But I can't see why it would not work. Why not backup your existing
version of Printers and install the new one.

I did download from the ROOL site, but that was still only 1.49.

Anyway, trying with 1.89 it fails with error messages, the main one
    being...

"File name 'USBmap' not recognised." What ever that might be?

Then most of the hard disc 4 applications will be available for updating individually, saves downloading the whole HD4 image to get one program.

Obviously majority will be intended for RISC OS 5.x

As it says it looking for USB based drivers. Did you just copy it from
another computer that had a USB based printer attached. Or downloaded a
    fresh copy?

You did remember to reboot after installing the new version hopefully.

You've only done half the job: the printer definitions resource is missing (!Boot.Resources.!PrintDefs usually), as Printer Manager refers to that for all its printer definitions, which includes the table mapping USB ids to printer definitions. It loads
the table regardless of which connection type you have,
    Sprow.

    Thanks...
Today... Tried the above and it did indeed add to Packman, where it
    downloaded.

Tried it and it just presented the same message as yesterday.

Then most of the hard disc 4 applications will be available for updating individually, saves downloading the whole HD4 image to get one program.

Removed this new version and reverted to the usual Printers+ 1.91a where
it had now become uppity... Now sorted.

Downloaded from the ROOL site and extracted from HardDisc4 yesterday.

    Yes, did reboots.

There are No USB printers here they are both attached to the LAN.

    ENUFFFFF!

Thanks for your thoughts Chris, appreciated. :-)
But I'm abandoning any further attempts to change Printers on VRPC.

    Aside note...

On my RPCEmu installs running RISC OS 5.28 and 5.29, the Printer update
from 1.89 to 1.90 went okay.

    Thanks

    Erm! Interesting...

On this VRPC-DL install RISC OS 6.20, in !Boot.Resources there is No "!PrintDefs".

Searching, I cannot find a !PrintDefs in RISC OS 6.20.

I see looking at the HardDisk4 archive downloaded from the ROOL site that Resources does contain !PrintDefs.

If I transfer that in, then the USBMap error goes away, however a new
    error presents, "Printers:pdf.Resources.support not found"

Oh good spot, forgotten the Printer defs were now in a little app.

    It's again available via Packman.

Thats because 6.20 did a different way (the old way if you like)

I see looking at the HardDisk4 archive downloaded from the ROOL site that Resources does contain !PrintDefs.

If I transfer that in, then the USBMap error goes away, however a new
    error presents, "Printers:pdf.Resources.support not found"

It would be in your !Boot.Choices "Printers" folder or should be.

I think Chris has guided you to several ways to get the missing bit.

You've got a lingering reference to the PDF generator that I think was part of RISC OS 4 (Taboraca?). You could probably transplant that from your earlier Printer Manager just to shut up the error message, but for PDF output you'd probably want PDFmaker (
RComp) or PrintPDF (Steve Fryatt). Personally I just print PostScript to a file then distill it but those are a couple of current ways to do it in one step,
    Sprow.
