• NewsHound problem

From Dave@21:1/5 to All on Sat Apr 3 08:52:53 2021
I can't find a reason why... Any useful thoughts, please.

Why does NewsHound insist it "Can't find a Group file" when the damn file
is in the same place it has always been since... A very long time ago?

Sometimes even quitting and re-running NewsHound doesn't fix it.
    Grrr!

    Thanks
    Dave

    Grrr!

Thats a bug which I am facing also from time to time. I have the advantage
that I have a NAS which stores the old version and so I can recover the file from there if required.

It should be located in !Boot.Choices.Newshound.Config. There should be
    at least four files

    Config
    dunGroup
    GlobeRule
    IdHist

    dunGroup looks like this

    # NewsHound news server group file
    # Automatically Created on Thu Aug 17 10:51:41 2000
    #
    # Rule file name:
    Global
    # News server hostname:
    server:port,user,password
    # Newsgroups:
    comp.sys.acorn.advocacy 35
    comp.sys.acorn.announce 2235
    ...

    Regards

Just had this error myself, found the ddun files had been locked as
    already open.

I used !CloseFiles to close the offending files and then it worked again.

!CloseFiles on my ARMX6 is by default in the Utilities folder

    Gaaaaa!
Unfortunately... When it happened today (Sunday), I checked and there were
    no open files.

Took the exercise to another machine and hit the same Group file problem.

The thing I was trying to set up was add another Newsgroup to an existing server... Being "news.eternal-september.org"

I set it up in Pluto and then checked it was correctly configured in the
server I'd set for it. (It was).

Then NH failed with the usual "Can't open group file" but interestingly it wasn't only the nesGroup file that failed, but singularly the other three server group files failed.

I started again with a different Server "News.Individual.NET" this time,
    adding in the required newsgroup.
This also failed, as did the individual other servers.

I removed the new Newsgroup, quit and then re-ran NewsHound, it thereafter processed through the servers without a hitch.

I therefore have to assume, for want of better evidence, the NG in
question is not carried by both those servers, or has not yet had time
    enough to propagate to them.

The newsgroup in question "alt.comp.software.firefox" was setup last week
as a replacement for the NOW closed "mozilla.support.firefox" (And
    Thunderbird) Newsgroups.

ATM. I'm getting both the "alt.comp.software.firefox" and "alt.comp.software.newshound" groups from "news.aioe.org" but obviously it
was my intention to (If possible) get them through my existing NG server.

Mine has a short cut on the desktop. I've configured all my
RISC OS machines this way, ever since I had an Archimedes.

It's not needed often but it's always to hand when needed.

I've never really got on with any of these quick access
applications. I have 29 short cuts on the desktop and,
although that might make it sound as if the desktop is
crowded, it isn't. The desktop is 3440×1440. There is a
vast acreage of empty space just waiting to be filled with
more icons - but that will never happen.

Currently, I have 27 of them spread horizontally just above
the icon bar (4 are in a sparse second row above the main
ones) and there is a gap between those on the right
(directories and files) and those on the left (application
short cuts) which will accommodate another 12. Another 2
are positioned mid-screen, one to remind me to access a
certain program daily, the other because it sits alongside
the default window of the program to which it refers.

This ignores the very few transient ones which are there as
reminders. They invariably look lonely and get put out of
their misery once I've dealt with them.

    Afterthought...

Is there a way to find a complete list of NewsGroups carried by a
    particular server?

As in all the NGs carried by say... "news.eternal-september.org"

    Thanks

In Newshound>Choices select Misc and there you'll find an option to "Get

    Thank you Brian,
Already done that, but unfortunately it just gives a blanket list of
what's available, and as I'm already getting the two in question via
news.aio it would be a given that it's on the list.

My question was a bit more specific...

Is there a way to find a complete list of NewsGroups carried by a particular server?
    ^^^^^^^^^^

To which I later replied myself...

"Found it... Go to the eternal-september.org website and check the

I guess the same would have to apply to other servers.

    Thanks for the thought, appreciated.
