• Amigas: Why so Expensive?

From Jason Stevens@21:1/5 to All on Sat Aug 29 04:46:32 2015
Even the magical AmigaOne x1000 priced at a mere :$2,780.20 USD can't bring
    her back.

    Just let her die.

    Long live WinUAE!

Seriously, I have no idea why the company behind the AmigaOne feels the
need to charge so much. I can't imagine that the processor is that
expensive and the motherboard - which is full of outdated technology -
can't possibly cost as much as they charge for it.

Exactly... Several years ago, I may have still been persuaded to buy
one out of pure nostalgia, if the cost were more in line with a typical desktop. I found it much more cost effective to simply purchase Amiga
Forever for < $50 (which I have) and emulate one on my $500 HP laptop.

Its not like there's any NEW software being written that justifies
laying out thousands of dollars on hardware. Heck, even the out-of-their-minds-Apple folks would balk at that price tag.

Boys and girls by now you should have reached the age of majority and
be able to recognize a number of cogent truths like the reality of
economies of scale which are not present in the Amiga Enthusiast

Oh, if it were custom hardware, I'd get. It'd still be way too
expensive a novelty for my wallet, but I'd get it. But there's nothing
in the specs that really justifies the high price tag on the hardware
end of things. Its all off-the-shelf stuff in an ATX form factor. Its
    not even off the top-shelf...

Recovering development costs of getting the OS to run on it, on the
other hand, is probably where its coming from. Unfortunately, its a self-defeating pricing policy... You need the money to recover the
cost, but the price point is so high nobody wants to buy it.
