We are pleased to announce the release of version 2.04 of the Network
Printer Drivers. It is live on !Store now.
The latest update resolves compatibility issues between the HP JetDirect support (aka generic network printing on port 9100 supported by most
network enabled printers) and recent changes to FileSwitch in beta verions
of RISC OS 5.29.
For those unfamiliar, the Network Printer Drivers 2 provides a number of facilities for printing and communicating with network-enabled printers, especially (but not only) laser printers.
Two protocols are supported - the more comprehensive, job-based LPR
system, and the more generic "HP JetDirect" approach (which most printers
seem to support).
The LPR support is a super-fast/optimised system for sending print jobs to network printers with a lot of neat features such as background printing,
job queuing, resending of data if the printer is busy or errored, multiple
file support (eg. send PDFs or JPEGs for direct printing) and more. Many printers support LPR - it is common in the Unix/Linux and even Windows/Mac space.
The JetDirect system is a simpler protocol, which sends print data to a (configurable) network port on the printer (or server). It is a common protocol supported by most network-enabled printers including some
inkjets. For example, a colleague was recently able to print to a
wireless HP inkjet in this manner, sending PCL data from RISC OS, via this driver.
Additionally, printer configuration and management desktop applications
are provided. This allows, for example, files to be dropped directly onto
an iconbar icon to be send (without modification) to your printer for
printing - useful as many modern printers support a wide range of file
formats for direct print.
As a special offer to coincide with this new release, the software is on special offer for 15ukp.
Best wises,
Andrew
