We are pleased to announce that the RISC OS, native ARM-powered Pinebook
Pro will be available at the SW RISC OS Show this weekend.
For those unfamiliar, the Pinebook Pro is the fastest stock-clocked RISC
OS machine ever, and also happens to achieve that running on battery
power, in a laptop form factor!
The multi-core processor gives RISC OS a high performance 1.8Ghz Cortex
A72 CPU to enjoy, and the screen provides a 14" 1080p IPS panel for great colour and viewing angles.
The Pinebook Pro features a super-slim, black aluminium chassis, with comfortable keyboard and generous touchpad. There are three USB ports
(two "normal" USB ports, and a USB C).
Storage is handled by 64GB of (expandable) eMMC internal flash storage,
and can be supplemented via a SD card slot. There's also an optional NVME
SSD connection, although this is not yet supported under RISC OS.
The RISC OS port includes battery management, screen brightness control, automatic dimming when idle, password security, optional remote access,
dynamic auto-sensing networking and lots more.
We will have a selection of units with RISC OS only, or a combo of RISC OS
+ Linux.
You can purchase your Pinebook Pro at the show for 499ukp inc VAT.
We will have a range of accessories including carry cases available.
In addition to all this, one of the most requested feature for the
original Pinebook was a way to connect to external projectors or monitors. We'll have an adapter available at the show which allows this, supporting
VGA, HDMI and DVI connections (all 3 are supplied). It doesn't require
any external power, so is ideal for carrying in your laptop bag in case
you need to hook up your laptop to an external screen.
(Note that there is a performance penalty to all current external monitor solutions. Whilst we have optimised for speed, we do not regard this as
an ideal "permanent" solution for connecting external monitors as there is still some lag when dragging large windows around).
The adapter supports all RISC OS 5 machines with 5.24+, although we'd
envision that this would primarily be useful to Pinebook/Pinebook Pro
users. The supplied RISC OS software includes special support for
Pinebook/Pro hardware, including automatic screen dimming, control over
the internal graphics architecture (improves stability when using the
external GPU), a wide range of screen modes and performance enhancing link optimisation.
Thanks go to Jeffrey Lee for his work producing the video driver that this
is based on.
The adapaters will be available at the show.
Best wishes,
Andrew
