Organizer 2.29 launched at the South West RISC OS Show
**vCard change a major step towards secure synchronisation**
Organizer, the personal information manager for all RISC OS platforms,
launches its long-awaited upgrade at the South West RISC OS Show. At
the heart of v2.29 is a major rewrite to the Address Book, upgrading
the vCard format from v2.1 to v3.0. This is a further step to prepare
Organizer for secure synchronisation across platforms. It is the most
extensive development work since North One took over the program a
decade ago and will maintain Organizer as an essential RISC OS
programme as the platform begins to expand again.
First steps towards syunchronisation have previously been taken with
the cloning facility introduced in v2.16, and encryption in v2.26.
Upgrading to vCard 3.0 will now make it possible to synchronise
Address data with other devices using the CardDAV protocol. Among the
immediate advantages are improved Address export scripts, allowing,
for instance, photos to be exported with other information. The photo
size has also been increased from 30k to 128k, offering better
definition photos - a step towards the Instagram age.
There are also improvements in other sections, including new iCal
export scripts and a 32-column, 364-day window in the Diary; new ToDo
List menus; and improved messages and Help for the cloning facility.
There are many small changes and bug-fixes, including catering for the
moved 2020 May Bank Holiday and repairing the Edit export scripts
facility.
Under-the-hood changes to improve performance as the programme grows
include replacing an ageing 26-bit compression programme with a new
32-bit programme, which reduces the 40,000 lines of code by 80%; and
better memory chaining for improved stability and maintenance.
Other sections of Organizer have already seen major improvements. The
success of the Planner, introduced in version 2.23, has led to a
complete rewrite of the Diary and Anniversary layouts to make them
multi-column and scalable. There is also an improved Print dialogue
box to show the printable area, plus a button to fill the area,
greatly improving the printing of any Organizer pages. And iCal import
and export, for working across a network and exchanging Diary
information with other software, such as Google Calendar, has been
enhanced.
Full price for Organizer 2.29 (including email support) for new users
and users of earlier versions is £35.
