• Geodata message protocol

From Matthew Phillips@21:1/5 to All on Sun Aug 29 22:22:22 2021
As part of our work on RiscOSM, the OpenStreetMap based vector-graphics map application for RISC OS, we have been developing a Wimp message protocol for developers to use to interact with RiscOSM. This is already used by Chris Hall's SatNav to plot the current position on the map, and by Recce, to plot points and other features of interest on the map, and to accept search terms from the user for lookup via online services.

The documentation is now available from our developer resources page: https://sinenomine.co.uk/software/riscosm/developers.php

You could use the protocol to:

    * write an application which responds to requests from RiscOSM and places points, routes or areas onto the map

    * write an application which tracks moving objects and sends their positions for plotting on the map

    * provide a database of photographs with geographical locations which the
user can search via a mapping application like RiscOSM

    * interface with an online source of geo-located data such as photos, statistics, police reports, public transport data

    * write a map application or database tool which interfaces with the data sources.

There are probably many other possibilities we have not thought of.

Not all of the protocol is fully supported, and we would be very glad to hear from developers with ideas for how it could be improved.
