• WinEd 3.25 Released

From Steve Fryatt@21:1/5 to All on Tue Jul 28 23:16:45 2020
After a slightly premature start last month, I'm pleased to announce the availability of WinEd 3.25.

WinEd 3.25 is the first significant update to the popular template editor in over a decade, and thanks to the help received from a number of developers, addresses several stability issues that the application had begun to suffer
on modern versions of RISC OS. Despite this, there was also time for some changes and improvements to the interface, including:

    * Improved window scrolling, taking into account the contents of the browser
and the statistics windows and supporting extended scroll requests when
available. This includes the templates being edited, and for previews if
such requests are enabled in the template.
    * Allowing the default action in the Icon Edit dialogue to be switched to
updating the icon data without changing the icon's dimensions, using a new
    option in the Choices dialogue.
    * Adding a Cancel button to the Resize Icons dialogue.
    * Replacing the arrows in the Align Icons dialogue with "left", "right",
    "up" and "down".
    * Standardising the capitalisation of validation commands in the Icon
    Picker.

For those who would like to check if their pet gripe has been resolved, the following bugs have been addressed:

    * Correctly set the Max text length field in the Edit icon dialogue box for
indirected, sprite-only icons, so that it doesn't return to "minimum" when
    the window next opens.
    * Limit ESG values to the range 0-15, in line with the changes made for
    Ursula.
    * Stop the overwrite check when files are saved to Wimp$Scrap as part of the
    Data Transfer Protocol.
    * Disable cursor key movement of selected icons during drag operations, to
    prevent the two interfering.
    * Make the browser pane fill the complete width of the browser window in
    large screen modes.
    * Resolve numerous Zero Pain issues in the code.
    * Ensure that template strings are correctly zero-terminated when passed to
    the debug logging system.
    * Ensure that the Save As dialogue closes after a save triggered by closing
    an unsaved file.

For those who haven't encountered it before, WinEd is a template editor
whose founding aim was "to do everything which TemplEd could do, only
better!" It was originally written by Tony Houghton, who developed it until 2003; his work was continued by Adam Richardson, who maintained and improved WinEd until 2009.

WinEd's most attractive features include the fact that its main editing interfaces use dialogue boxes. Icons can be dragged between windows,
including a customisable 'Picker' window containing the most commonly used icons, and multiple template files can be loaded by one instantiation of
WinEd. Optional tool panes and keyboard short cuts enhance convenience.

It contains powerful features for positioning icons relative to each other,
and rounding of coordinates in high resolution modes to ensure low
resolution compatibility. Conventions are based on ROOL's Style Guide. Statistics are available on the size and content of template files, to
assist with loading them into simple applications.

WinEd is licenced under the GPLv2, and copies of 3.25 can be found in the PlingStore and at
