thanks, but sadly no "behind the scenes" info - just advises for every scenario to contact service rep for problems. Hoping there is a BIOS set code or sequence... maybe I can set the defaults or something... :-)

There is no BIOS... this does not boot anything at all like a PC. There
may be some key sequence you can give it that will give you some information about the boot process, but you'll need the service manual for that.
The guys at bitsavers are the first people I'd ask, also the people on comp.sys.dec.
