• It's Halloween: What's Your Spooky Game of Choice?

From Spalls Hurgenson@21:1/5 to All on Tue Oct 31 15:50:52 2023
Just what the topic says: It's Halloween (or, depending on where you
live, it was Halloween. Hello Australia!). You need to play a spooky
video game. What game do you pick?

I think I'll go with "The Suffering". It's an older title, and gets a
bit tedious near the end, but it is surprisingly creepy... especially
at the start, before you collect your usual armory. The design of the
monsters - representing the various ways people have died at the
haunted prison in which you find yourself ensconced - are all quite
well done, and the game makes good use of light and sound.

"Outlast" is pretty good too, in terms of creating a horrific
atmosphere... but I find the whole "you're powerless to fight the
monster" gameplay more annoying than enjoyable. But it can be
    wonderfully creepy.

So... how are you scaring yourself this Halloween?

Luigi's Mansion, too much of a scardy to play a more intense horror
    game. Maybe FNAF.

Well, as I'm in the middle of the System Shock Remake currently, so
that. Not really that spooky, I guess the idea was to mix normal with
awful, elevator music and a mutant eating a human corpse and all that,
in a cartoon-bright space station. Somehow it doesn't work for me.

System Shock 2 did much better in creating a scary atmosphere.

"Resident Evil 7" has its moments too (especially the first half of
the game, when it rivals "Outlast" in some of its icky scares.

But I realize I probably should have fired up "Aliens: Isolation" if I
really wanted to scare myself. While the game itself drags on for far
too long, and I tired of the whole crafting mechanic about ten seconds
after it was introduced, it was an incredibly intense game. The
titular xenomorph is a relentless but unpredictable hunter and you
spend the entire game on your toes. But - unlike many similar games -
you never feel completely powerless against it. While you rarely can
FIGHT the alien effectively, your various tools - noisemakers and
other distractions - give you some control over your situation.

At least until you run out. Then you're screwed.

I finished "Alien: Isolation" the once. I haven't been able to make
myself endure that trial a second time though. ;-)

Movies I guess, but even then they usually don't get to me. The Ring
should probably be my go-to, but I didn't watch that.

I didn't play anything spooky, though the wastes has some spooky
Fallout like music and wandering the wasteland with death around
every corner is slightly scary I guess. Most things just don't get to me. Jump scares just annoy me.

I used to play Doom around the holiday, but that was 30ish years
ago, and I did it more for the audio atmosphere while trick or treaters
    were coming.

There was a particular questline in Warframe that did a real good
job - The Man in the Wall. I heard they made a way to go back and
redo questlines, but I feel like it wouldn't be the same.

Dark souls maybe, everyone's undead in those. The damn ghosts
in the first one are hell.

I really can't say I have any* as although I've played a few horror
games they just seem to rely on jump scares. The other problem I have is
that unless I feel some sort of connection with the character you're
playing I just don't feel the horror however horrific the situation is.

So my horror of choice is Call of Cthulhu RPG where I do feel a
connection that I just don't getting in video games and you're often in situations where you feel powerless. We played last night and the end
scene was me helping a very troubled old man to die by shooting him
through the heart. That does get my emotions going.

*The one scary moment I do remember though was in HL:1 when the accident happens and you get transported to Xen. That completely shifted my
expectations on what type of game I was playing. Oh and the part much
later on where you are navigating paths around a high cliff. That
    brought my vertigo on.

Just the regular version was enough for me. Although I don't really
get that much benefit from VR (in fairness, I've never tried it with
RE7 so who knows, maybe that would have been the thing to convince me
    of VR's utility ;-)

You're not the only one. Well, with finding the game boring, not the
    mom bit. ;-)

    I first encountered "7th Guest" /after/ I played "Myst", so I've
always seen it as a "Myst-clone", even though the game itself released
prior to Cyan's classic adventure.[1] And since "Myst" helped kill the
classic adventure genre (which I adored), games like "7th Guest" -
perhaps unfairly - were saddled with an automatic negative reaction
    from me.

Still, the game itself just wasn't that entertaining. It was little
more than a series of fairly bland logic puzzles. Sure, there was an overarching story and the presentation added some atmosphere, but its
story and characters weren't particularly interesting and the
atmosphere was fairly bland. Despite its horror theme, it wasn't a
scary game. If you didn't like solving "tower of Hanoi", "word
jumble", "memory puzzle" and "chess moves" puzzles one after the
other, the gameplay wasn't going to enthrall you.

What "7th Guest" had going for it was its technology; it was at the
forefront of the CD-ROM revolution. Its full-color, full-screen,
full-motion video was amazing to behold in an era where most PC games
still struggled to move a few sprites across mostly static
backgrounds. It felt like a hint of what was to come, a peek into the
future of computer games where we could roam through fully-rendered
lifelike 3D worlds. But once you got past that 'wow' factor?

Well, there aren't a lot of people who remember "7th Guest" for its
story (quick! What was the name of the villain? Do you even
remember?)[2] or its gameplay. We remember it because of how exciting
its technology seemed. But now that we have easy access to games that
blow "The 7th Guest's" visuals out of the water, the game itself
becomes forgettable. If you weren't playing games in 1993, it's hard
to imagine why anybody should care about this game.

Henry something. Bald guy who made toys for children. That is all I
    remember about him.

For me, Rebel Assault 1 even though it was linear and short. I regretted buying it. :(

playing I just don't feel the horror however horrific the situation is.

That completely shifted my expectations on what type of game I was playing. Oh and the part much
later on where you are navigating paths around a high cliff. That
    brought my vertigo on.

For me, System Shock 2. :O

Just what the topic says: It's Halloween (or, depending on where you
live, it was Halloween. Hello Australia!). You need to play a spooky

I think I'll go with "The Suffering". It's an older title, and gets a
bit tedious near the end, but it is surprisingly creepy... especially
at the start, before you collect your usual armory. The design of the monsters - representing the various ways people have died at the
haunted prison in which you find yourself ensconced - are all quite
well done, and the game makes good use of light and sound.

"Outlast" is pretty good too, in terms of creating a horrific
atmosphere... but I find the whole "you're powerless to fight the
monster" gameplay more annoying than enjoyable. But it can be
    wonderfully creepy.

So... how are you scaring yourself this Halloween?

Movies I guess, but even then they usually don't get to me. The Ring
should probably be my go-to, but I didn't watch that.

For me, I finally watched the first Friday the 13th. It was lame.
Halloween 1 was better. Also, I saw Beetlejuice for my first time. It
was decent. As for gaming, I did play Diablo 4 briefly a few weeks ago.
All of these entertainments were before Halloween. :P

    "Rebel Assault" was triply disappointing.

Firstly, because its streaming video technology was awful. The
video was so incredibly compressed that it was often hard to make out
what you were looking at, much less have any real detail show through.
True, it was a game designed to run on a 386 with a 1x CD-ROM, so
there wasn't much they could really do about it, but other games of
the era offered better examples of what the tech could do.

Secondly, the gameplay. It was a very unexciting shooter with
extremely imprecise controls. Because the game was just sprites moving
on top of a streaming video background, the game lacked any sort of replayability. It was DULL.

Thirdly, LucasArts and the media had hyped this game up as a 'next generation "X-Wing" game', and it was anything but. Even going into
the game knowing it was a glorified arcade, it was disappointing by
how primitive it was compared to Lawrence Holland's seminal space
    shooter.

The /only/ thing "Rebel Assault" had going for it was that it was Star
Wars; neither its tech nor its gameplay were exciting in the least. A
lot of the games of that era weren't very good, but you could get
energized by the idea that they were showcasing where games were going
in the future. "Rebel Assault" didn't offer that same thrill.

Admittedly, I got more game-play out of "Rebel Assault" than ever I
did "7th Guest", but that had more to do with a) my inability to
believe the game was REALLY that bad, and b) my die-hard fascination
with anything Star Wars. Even if I didn't like it as much, I would
have been quick to admit that "The 7th Guest" was the /far/ better
    game of the two.

Having said that, I do have a soft spot in my heart for "Rebel Assault
II". The tech of that game was far superior, with impressive video
streaming for its day. It's story was more entertaining and the
gameplay - although still not very good - was streamlined over the
original. It didn't hurt that it was the first official live-action
Star Wars production since "Return of the Jedi". And its Easter egg
    MST3K-mode was the best!
