    "The Number" that is.

All praise The Number. May it go ever up!

"Moonring"... well, I'll take it, but I can't imagine playing it. The Ultima-style graphics have a certain charm to them, but - having
played through that era of games - I've no real desire to return to
it. I /like/ my games with flashy graphics, thank-you-very-much.

(Plus, if my video-card isn't smoking from excessive visual-bling,
what was the point in spending so much money on all that hardware? ;-)

And, as much as I /adored/ playing the classic RPGs in the day, their mechanical limitations just grate on me. I'm much happier with a more
immersive game like modern-day Skyrims or Baldurs Gates. And if I
really want to relive the games of yesteryear... well, "Ultima V" has
a permanent spot on my hard-drive already.

So, I welcome Moonring to my library (and thank rms for the
notification) but I can't imagine it will get actually installed
anytime soon. Maybe if I end up on that desert island with nothing
    else to do...

    "The Number" that is.

    What is The Number?

"The Number" refers to the total number of games in your video game
library (e.g., all the games you own). It's become something of a
    running joke in the newsgroup.

It is, in part, a commentary on how many games are being given away
for free on Epic, GOG and elsewhere. There is just not enough time to
play all the free games provided (had you even the desire to play them
at all), thus the only point to these freebies must be to make "The
    Number" go up.

    (I didn't say it was a /good/ joke)

It is also, perhaps, a comment on how, with the diminishing quality of
a lot of modern games, you often get more joy just from collecting /
hoarding the games than actually playing them.

It's also a bit of self-deprecation in that the obvious solution would
just be to NOT grab every game given away for free, but some of us
lack that sort of self control. Thus, rather than admit it, we say
that making "The Number" go up is a praiseworthy goal in and of
    itself.

TL;DR: A c.s.i.p.g.action shibboleth that arguably was never funny,
almost certainly has gone on to long already, but will probably last
forever now. God knows I intend to keep dragging it out again and
    again, anyway. ;-)

Even shorter version, its a dead horse that won't die.

Nice! I have 486 games on Steam alone, and I'll probably try to keep it
there because "The Number" is 486, and my first PC was a 486DX33.

At least until the next sale comes along.

I have enough games to play until I'm dead. Maybe even enough for another lifetime after that, if backwards compatibility is maintained.
