From Spalls Hurgenson@21:1/5 to All on Fri Sep 22 12:15:09 2023
Oops, I forgot to do the Prime Gaming Announcement last week. But the
question is, does it matter? Did we all miss out on some great and
exciting games? Or is it just the usual filler? Let's find out.

    * Ozymandias (requires GOG)
"The Bronze Age Empire Sim". An Indie 4X
strategy game set in the bronze age Middle East
(extra paid-for DLC unlocks play in other regions).
It's a smaller, streamlined Civilization, designed
so that a campaign can be completed in an hour or so.
Good if that's what you want, but I prefer something
with more meat on its bones.

    * Absolute Tactics: Daughters of Mercy
A "tactical RPG", whatever that means. Mostly, it
seems to mean extremely limited animation and
options. Doesn't look very entertaining, and I can't
say I care much for the art style.

    * Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate
Chess crossed with rogue-like mechanics... and a shotgun.
Novel enough that it's worth looking at just to
experience its weirdness, but I'm not sure it's
something I'd enjoy playing for long.

    * Dexter Stardust: Adventures in Outerspace
    An Indie-developed, retro-graphics action/platformer.
Not my cuppa at all. Also, it doesn't work with
    mouse/keyboard. Meh.

I mean, not a TERRIBLE selection of games, but really, nothing
exciting either. If your selection of games is struggling to reach
mediocrity, maybe you need to think about investing a bit more into
    the service, Amazon?

Until next week. Unless I forget again.

Prime gaming is mostly bottom of the barrel anyway, but hey... its free
(at least if you pay for prime)

While we're on the subject there's also: "The Night of the Rabbit", free
on GOG.com right now and "Lonely Knight" on Steam:

Both purely for the game number's game, I'd assume (haven't checked).

    I didn't know it existed.

You need to put these announcements in their own threads or nobody
    will see them :-)

"Lonely Knight" is interesting. It has some impressive looking visuals
and details, but reviews indicate the fighting mechanics are poor. But apparently it's designed by a single person. And, not to diminish the
talent of its lone developer, "Lonely Knight" showcases how powerful
modern game engines are, that a single developer can create something
    so (visually) spectacular.

Forty years ago, garage developers were struggling to whip out games
that had four-color graphics. Twenty years ago, you'd need a
hundred-person team to make something look this good. Now? One guy
(albeit with the aid of the thousands at Epic). Give him a handful of
friends to help him in areas he is weak, and "Lonely Knight" might be
    worth playing...

Yet, meanwhile, the thousand-strong teams at Ubisoft and Activision
managed to pump out the same pabulum time and again...

Yes, The Number is important. All praise The Number! May it ever grow!

Most months I find one or two games that I would have considered buying
if they were on sale at the £5 mark but the last couple of months seems
to have been rather poor. Saying that I've still got a large backlog of
games from it that I haven't got around to playing.
