• Jagged Alliance 3 and Xenonauts 2

From Metal Guru@21:1/5 to All on Tue Jul 18 20:58:44 2023
Anybody looking forward to these two games? JA2 is one of my all time
favorites and initial reviews of JA3 have been very positive so far.

I didn't much care for the first Xenonauts, I found it pretty dull and
quit after a few hours. I might give it another go while I wait for the
prices of both games to drop, though.

Not particularly, but I say that with a good deal of regret.

The "Jagged Alliance" games are a franchise I just never could get
into. I think that is largely because - when they were new - I was
burnt out playing so much X-Com, and this made me look more harshly on
the JA games than they deserved. The series felt like a clunkier, less imaginative version of Microprose's titles. It's not a fair
assessment, but that's how I felt at the time, and I've never been
entirely able to overcome that initial impression.

"Xenonauts" /was/ a clunkier, less impressive version of "X-Com", and
it had the bad luck to be released around the same time as I was
replaying (or at least trying to replay) the UFO series, which were
also shallow retreads of X-Com. It looked exceptionally poor compared
to the newer X-Com games too which - for all their faults - added some much-needed excitement and visual polish to the genre.

But in truth, the "Jagged Alliance" and "Xenonauts" franchises are
fine... if you really dig the old-school tactical RNG combat of the
originals and want more, more, more! of the stuff. Myself, while I can appreciate the genre it never had all that much draw for me. I can
play them here and there, but it's not the sort of thing I get really
excited about. I may eventually give JA3 and X2 a look; I may even
like the games. But I'm not waiting on tenterhooks for their release.

JA3 looks good. Looks like they kept the spirit of the series. Turn-based tactics are a favorite of mine.

Still have to wade into Wasteland 3 first though.

I was really tempted to pre-order Jagged Alliance 3, but I still need
to get a video card for my new PC so I can play modern games and recent unexpected expenses have put that off even further. Aside from that I
promised myself to try to make a dent in my video game backlog this summer
by playing older less demanding games that wouldn't heat my room as much.

I liked it better than the Firaxis XCOM games, though it's a bit dry.
I'll pick up Xenonauts 2 eventually, but not while its still in early
access. From the sounds of things there's still a fair bit about the
    game that's unfinished.

Yeah, I didn't realize it was still in early access.

These delays are wild though - Xenonauts 2 was announced more than 7
years ago, definitely not a good sign. They're approaching GTA6/TES6
levels of development time and are now saying at least 9 months to a
year before full release. And the game doesn't even look all that
different from the first one graphically and gameplay wise, either.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have looked a Xenoauts but my impression was that it was basically
XCom with a smaller budget. As I still haven't finished that I thought
there's no point in buying Xenoauts as well.

JA 3, that interests me more, even though I've not played 1 or 2, just a
bit too pricey at the moment so it's gone onto the wishlist.
