Well, files. Stuff. All kinds of things that I "kinda want to keep
around but aren't that important". Originally (sometime around 2008 I
guess) I set something like that up so I could have a box that could do
bigger downloads while I mess around with my main desktop.

Learning too, I picked specific components, a motherboard with 2.5 Gbps ethernet but also wifi + bluetooth built in. Which is what I'm likely
going to have when I update my desktop later. So for example, I haven't
had bluetooth in a desktop in a long time so I'll be wanting to see how
easy or hard it's to setup and use for, say, audio. In Linux, without a
common desktop environment where bluetooth would show up as a mini icon.

With wifi the thing could probably work as a wifi router in an
    emergency.

Also, my desktop is still booting via BIOS emulation and partition
tables are all MBR. So I setup the new file server with UEFI boot and
GPT partition tables. Wasn't that hard in a new system, it'll be a lot
more interesting if I try to convert my existing desktop to UEFI & GPT
as there are three operating systems to convert. But there are
straightforward instructions on how to do that so it seems this'll be
doable. Might even enable secure boot if I get around to that.

    Mainly I guess it's a hobby computer.
