• FREE GAME: Payday 2

From Spalls Hurgenson@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jun 8 11:04:38 2023
Okay, so Epic is still keeping everything mysterious until the great
unveiling. What will the game be this week? Only way to find out is to
go to their website. Or just wait for me to announce it here.

This week, the free games is....

    * PayDay 2
    https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/payday-2-c66369
An old classic, but a good one. Sure, it wasn't particularly original,
and it got overrun by MTX and cosmetics, but the core gameplay was
always solid. Live out your cops-n-robbers fantasies as you rob
convenience stores, hospitals, banks, and more. Given its age, it
might be hard to get into if you've never played it before - the
audience are all probably hard-core experts who know every trick and
secret - but find a bunch of friends and have fun messing around.

168 hours and counting down before the game goes away. But that's
plenty of time to claim it... or not.

Dead Island got panned in the latest PC Gamer 55/100. Dulll design
choices, repetitive combat, painfully weak story.

I have the original one but I don't think I played it for very long.

Payday games were fun. I see #3 is coming out soon. They sure are
milking it. I remember seeing their small booth in E3(RIP?) back in 2014
    when leaving EOD (hump day).

So basically, the original all over again?

"Dead Island" was such a disappointment. Its advertising campaign did
it no favors though; remember that awesome heartstring-pulling
advertisment?* It suggested something a lot more than the fairly bland looter-shooter we actually got. The unappealing characters, repetitive environments, awful weapon-breakage mechanics and generally
unsatisfying combat loop were no help either.

Techland fortunately took some of the lessons from "Dead Island's" unsatisfactory performance and made a better game with "Dying Light".
That game had its share of flaws too, but it was head-and-shoulders
    better than "Dead Island".

Still, when I heard that they were making a "Dead Island 2", I was
skeptical. There just didn't seem anything worth salvaging from that
IP: not the story, not the gameplay. It would have to be a truly
transformed game for it to be worth playing, in which case, why return
to the IP in the first place if you're starting from scratch anyway?
Still, I wasn't going to entirely write off the franchise; after all,
the developers had shown an ability to learn from their mistakes. But
it was definitely a game I was going to wait-and-see.

I have the original one but I don't think I played it for very long.

You aren't really missing anything. What you saw in the first hour of
gameplay matched what you saw in the fortieth hour. It's a
characterless "Borderlands" clone with zombies and less compelling
    gameplay.
