I've heard that few people liked Diablo 3, but could you tell me why? For me it was the broken multiplayer. It wasn't the graphics, they were pretty good.

The game did suck when it first came out. You could not log in to play
it as the servers were always down.

Item drops were piss poor. You couldn't get a decent item to drop.
Which effectively meant that the loot table was broken... in a hack
and slash game. Yeah, that is bad.

And there was the real money auction house. You did not find your gear
in the game. You purchased it with $$ in the AH. Ugh.

All of these problems went away when the expansion pack came out. Of
course, this was too late for some people who moved on to other games.

Diablo 3 is one of the best hack and slashers ever. But it was one of
    the worst at release.

Ouch. I hope they restored some of that good will for IV and don't plan

I heard all of that stuff about III and just decided that I would pass.
Play Torchlight or something. I wonder how many people joined me?

I passed and I would have continued passing but a friend asked me to
buy it when it was on sale and play the game with him. By that point,
the expansion was out and the game was in a much better state.

There is a decent chance I was playing Torchlight 2 or Titan Quest at

    over the coming many months.

And more expansions. They don't even include all classes like paladins!

I can accept a straight-up DLC expanding upon a core basic game like
that. Especially for cosmetics like skins that are totally unnecessary.
Less so for core, traditional classes. Yeah, it disappoints longtime
customers, but they were already buying it. This I understand.

    <rant>

But (perhaps deliberately) releasing a broken loot system and
simultaneously introducing an "auction house" item market to "fix it" is horrible. I just swore off Diablo entirely, and I _like_ 3rd person
    looter RPGs.

This MTX to win/set up a microeconomy with commissions just to play
effectively nonsense has got to go. I hope they leave that on the phones,
pls, and I hope we continue to resist it. I find it insulting to my intelligence as a member of the PC Master Race. To me there's a
distinction between predatory practices/whale hunting and what you
described, which is just spreading out consumer costs to make the true
cost to value equation more palatable to the consumer.

Personally though, I wish they'd just drop all of that DLC stuff too and
just raise the prices of games and provide a complete game up front. I
think most of their market would accept that and it would lessen the bad
will resulting from nickel-and-diming us. Pleasing your legacy clients increases organic buzz, and organic buzz results in expansion of a
market. Once you have a unicorn franchise like Diablo, why kill it like
    that?

But my contemporary marketing classes and experience with client
expectations (make a buck! NOW!) tells me the opposite, as well as my development PM and management best practices, and that's whom they're
listening to. It allows for earlier release and pleases the stockholders.

Personally, I would buck the trend and I think my client would be
pleasantly suprised by the results. All this bad will prioritizes
short-term gain at the expense of longevity. Longevity, IMO, is actual
success and where the real money is. It's a "grow the brand" philosophy, consistently applied and not followed by "cannibalize the brand you just built." This maximal monetization and move on like a pack of locusts
method is going to have a ruinous end, and there's no guarantee they can restart the build good will then capitalize cycle. It's just "pump and
dump" and customers are going to detect the "dump" phase more readily as
it goes on. It's like a drug addiction, less effective with each dose,
and the devs/publishers are either going to recognize that or eventually
crash out when they want to cash out.*

I've heard that few people liked Diablo 3, but could you tell me why? For me it was the broken multiplayer. It wasn't the graphics, they were pretty good.

I enjoyed it fine, It was just a bit too grindy, much like 2 IMHO. I
actually enjoyed it a bit more before they got rid of the auction
house as it made it easy to trade stuff. I never used the real
money auction house though. I suppose I just didn't enjoy it
    enough though.

I'm not planning on picking up 4 with that insane price and MTX.

You could not play offline single player at all - online only so you got
the single player experience with LAG and disconnects.

Then there was the "we deserve more money" crap design which meant once
you got out of normal difficulty you HAD TO hit the REAL MONEY AUCTION
HOUSE for gear since the drops were so fucking shit or you did not
    progress at all.

You hit a fucking wall and could not progress without paying Blizzard -
    fuck that, fuck them, uninstalled.

D3 made it 3 months, D2 was installed for over 10 fucking YEARS.

A game tuned to drive you to spend more cash, where the previous 2 (and expansions) did not.

Not even thinking about considering rolling the dice on maybe looking at
D4 - Blizzard Burned that bridge out of existence with D3.

Blizzard will never get a dime from me ever again.

Sorry, but aren't they MicroActiZard now anyway. Blizzard, bought by
Activision (Infogrames who changed their name after alienating the
entire gaming community) and now owned by Microsoft, literally the worst
    game developer ever.

    Yeah, my wallet is secure.

    Not. Yet.

They're still ActiBlizz. The merger is still blocked in the UK
(although that's weakening) and hearings are scheduled in the US too.
Things are less shakey elsewhere, sadly, with many other countries
having given the nod to the deal already.

Because consolidations like this are always good for the customers,

Oh god, yeah, I forgot that part. That was annoying as hell, and the
required downtime when they did updates, which inevitably were
a big chunk of my then more limited time.

I never ran into that, I finished the game at least and had fun with friends. The NG+ (or whatever they called them) were pretty slow going, and
grindfests though. So pay real money or grind for who knows how long.

I did run into having to trade items to progress, but that's why I liked
    the non-money auction house.

I think I played it a bit on the DLC, which was after they'd got rid of the auction houses all together. I found that far more annoying as you
still needed to trade to make reasonable progress, but you had to
    go do it through forums.

Blizzard will never get a dime from me ever again.

Even though my experience was better, I still pretty much have this
attitude toward them. If my friends get sucked in I might join them
though just as there'd then be something I could do with them.

I think they've been into Path of Exile which didn't grab me though.

There were another couple things as well linked to the online only part
    - forced updating so Blizzard could fuck with the gameplay any time and
    no ability to mod.

D2 on the other hand I could play at a patch level where Blizzards
"Balancing" hadn't destroyed all kinds of builds and use QoL mods like increased inventory space.

Then there was the "we deserve more money" crap design which meant once
you got out of normal difficulty you HAD TO hit the REAL MONEY AUCTION

grindfests though. So pay real money or grind for who knows how long.

I got through normal difficulty no problem, but about halfway through
the next difficulty level I hit a wall - in the desert I think enemies I
could not do enough damage to unless I hit the RMAH and spent cash.

I did run into having to trade items to progress, but that's why I liked
    the non-money auction house.

I think I played it a bit on the DLC, which was after they'd got rid of the >auction houses all together. I found that far more annoying as you

I gave up the game no more than 3 months after release and never looked
back. Even with the auction house removed, it's still forces me to be
online for single player and randomly disconnected me cause they didn't
have enough servers to handle the load.

Blizzard will never get a dime from me ever again.

Even though my experience was better, I still pretty much have this

Over all liked PoE, except for the bit where you could upgrade a skill
into uselessness cause the downsides or energy cost got absurd.
