A free game inspired by Umberto Eco's novel and Jean-Jaques Annaud's film
"The Name of the Rose", and based on the game "La abadía del crimen" by
    Paco Menéndez and Juan Delcán.

I think it's always gonna be free, but someone posted it up in another

Ta, so I nabbed it. It seems to be a remake of a Speecky 48k game which
    I find a bit cool.

This newsgroup is pretty dead, the action newsgroup is basically all
    that is left
from the once mighty pc section of usenet!

"The Name of the Rose" was always one of my favorite books, both for
its engaging Cadfael-esque plot, its philosophies, and its take on the
history of the era. Its labyrinthine library also featured in more
than one table-top D&D adventure that I have run (albeit not always as
a library). My players will attest that its maze of twisty little
passages, all alike, is incredibly difficult to navigate without
    making a map ;-)

(The movie was enjoyable, but really had little to do with the book
except in the broadest strokes of the plot).

I doubt the game will match the book in depth but, honestly, any
homage to such a classic Eco story deserves to be added to any
    video-game collection, regardless of quality.

So I'm very grateful for the heads up on this one.

    I see more than 5-6 (more like 8-9 :))

Hopefully I can add to this list for now. I am not sure if this post
will go through. Should have tested it at alt.test.

    Your post worked. :P

    Awesome! Thanks for confirming.

    You're welcome. :)

    Just beware, he's a MutANT!

    So? ;)

Apparently, he is also Professor X. Good advocacy there, Ant.

Wow. I did not expect this enthusiasm and interest for this game. I guess
    I don't know y'all as well as I thought.
    Glad to be of service.

    Other NOTR-inspired titles are:

I've finished and reviewed Pentiment -- one of the best games of 2022 --
and played some hours of The Abbey, which I need to get back to, it's a very >decent adventure game.

Wait what? I mean, this is the "action" subgroup, right? We should take
this to "adventure" and needlessly split the csipg hierarchy some more.
    Tee hee.

The Usenet dogmatist in me tells me we should move all of this (that we
do here) to the main group to preserve the integrity and intent of the hierarchy and stop using "action."* But this works too. ;^)

Thank you for Pentiment. I added it to my wishlist.

*No. Seriously. Does anyone think we can just successfully move all of
this to main? I'm serious. Truly. Very. Willful disorganization and
improper use of a carefully planned system just grinds my gears. o_O

I have such fondness for "Them", even it it is really just the
climatic battle scene in the Los Angeles sewers that gets to me. The
soldiers creeping around the dark tunnels with the monster ants
lurking somewhere around the corner; it really had an effect on me.

I'm pretty sure my love of D&D (and later other tabletop games)
stemmed at least partly from a desire to recreate the tension of that
    scene...

It's Umberto Eco - it is not free, it will likely cost you your sanity.
