• FREE GAME: Midnight Ghost Hunt

From Spalls Hurgenson@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jun 1 11:07:14 2023
Why oh why must Epic hide their newest offerings under the "mystery
game" moniker until after it is released? Don't they know how hard
that makes it for us unlucky sods who have to report on the issue and
want to prepare the write-up /before/ it's actually available? Now I
have to wait just like everyone else and then scramble to jot down a
few words before Ant pre-empts me with his announcement. The stress of
    it all is killing me!

Anyway, we get a free game. This week, it's:

    * Midnight Ghost Hunt
    https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/midnight-ghost-hunt
Think of it as multiplayer ghostbusters. Be the ghost or be the ghost
hunters. It's a multiplayer-only game and in early-access too. If you
like scouring levels for hidden enemies this might appeal. Well, it's
free so I won't complain too much. Won't play it much either, I
    expect.

Seven days and counting down; that's how long you have to claim this
freebie. Grab it now or lose it forever (or maybe not, if it repeats).

Ditto. I love the original Ghostbusters even if its #2 wasn't rad. Same
for its video games and cartoons (ugh, Slimer episodes though). I still
want to play that 2009(?) video game that acted like a third movie
    though.

If you liked the original movie, I strongly recommend the 2009 game.
It's got some weak voice acting in parts (Bill Murray in particular
sounds like he just phoned it in) but it captures the overall feel and
humor of the movie fairly well (and there are nods to the animated
series and sequel movie too). The gameplay isn't particularly
enthralling but its good enough. But - like "Alien: Isolation" or "War
for Cybertron", the gameplay isn't really the focus or draw anyway.
You play these games because you want to experience first-hand the
fantasy of the movie, and "Ghostbusters" does that very well.

(there was a remake of the 2009 movie; it supposedly updated the
visuals somewhat but I have no idea if it made any other changes. The
original is still very playable though)

Yeah, I need to buy and play which I don't have time. I did watch the
video playthrough many years ago like a very long movie. ;)

only a good movie because it was better than its predecessor and
because it was full of fan service. But the movie itself was too safe,
too kid-friendly. It had none of the rough fun of the original movie.
It made "Ghostbusters 2" look dangerous.

The 2009 video game was very flawed, but it was a far better
"Ghostbusters 3" than anything that ever came to screen. (Sort of like
"Fate of Atlantis" was to the Indiana Jones franchise).

Why oh why must Epic hide their newest offerings under the "mystery game" moniker until after it is released? Don't they know how hard

Anyway, we get a free game. This week, it's:

    * Midnight Ghost Hunt https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/midnight-ghost-hunt
Think of it as multiplayer ghostbusters. Be the ghost or be the ghost hunters. It's a multiplayer-only game and in early-access too. If you like scouring levels for hidden enemies this might appeal. Well, it's free so I won't complain too much. Won't play it much either, I
    expect.

Oof. Well thanks for the announcement, I picked it up, but yeah,
    not my scene.
Ditto. I love the original Ghostbusters even if its #2 wasn't rad. Same
for its video games and cartoons (ugh, Slimer episodes though). I still
want to play that 2009(?) video game that acted like a third movie
    though.

Wasn't that one given away on EPIC? I played it for a bit, but just didn't
    get through it.

    Movie?

    Sorry, game.

They never made any Ghostbuster movies in the 2000s ;-)

    Not even in the Afterlife?

"Afterlife" - not that such a movie ever existed, of course ;-P - was
only a good movie because it was better than its predecessor and
because it was full of fan service. But the movie itself was too safe,
too kid-friendly. It had none of the rough fun of the original movie.

FoA, now there's a blast from the past.

I did like afterlife, but mostly cause the previous "ghost busters"
movie was so very, very, very, very (I need to type about 1 billion
    verys here,) bad.

Yes a bit of fan service, and a bit kid friendly, but lets face it the
original Ghost busters was not exactly NOT kid friendly.

Afterlife was a decent follow-on that actually felt like it belonged to
the franchise, unlike the Melissa McCarthy one that was just wrong on so
    many levels.

Not against an all female version, but that take failed on all levels,
all the way through. I did like Chris Hemsworth's bit though, although
    it didn't really fit well.

Funny seeing "Thor" that way, but it was merely a distraction and not
enough to distract me from how horrible the movie was.
