• Worth Crowd Funding Games

From Geeknix@21:1/5 to All on Sat Apr 29 06:00:03 2023
I'm in the mood to burn money on crowdfunding sites. I recall past games
I liked like Leisure Suit and Monkey Island getting remakes on sites
like Kick Starter. I always joined in once the games were on the market.

I'm wondering if there are any ongoing funding for worthy games you know
of? Or even funded games that might be worth checking out?

    Cheers..

    I don't really do crowdfunding

(so why am I responding to this post at all? Even I wonder sometimes.)

especially not for products that will later be released commercially.
I'm happier supporting products that will be later released to the
public gratis but crowdfunding a game that you're later going to
charge people to buy feels like double-dipping to me

(and yes, you can make valid arguements that it's not, and that in
fact crowdfunding is little different than accepting money from an
investor or publisher. Logically you are correct (investors typically
have more protections and control though) but emotionally?
    Double-dipping, says my heart).

So, instead, these days I'm more into supporting creators through
Patreon or whatnot. Or giving a quick tip to a mod-creator via paypal
or their payment server of choice.

Wow, I haven't considered this in some time; I did back Overload, and
System Shock, one which came out and the other finally getting a release in May?! I will pass your request onto another forum, and see if I get an suggestions!

The indie industry of game development burned me a few times on such
things. Not terribly interested in doing it again after DayZ. Too much fly
by night horseshit happens with little organization or management.

I don't have a problem with crowd funding etc. as long as it's a company
that is pretty much saying this game won't get made unless we can
de-risk our investment in it and also provide a smoother level of
    external funding from customers.

Thanks rms. I like the idea of backing old school devs who developed
some of my favourite games when they do reboots/remasters. Or even
    sequels.

Not sure why, they probably don't need the money and I normally go for
the cheapest fund which normally only gets you a small discount and
    early access.

    I don't really do crowdfunding

I am a little picky. Usually I back those devs I remember from the
80s/90s/00s when they make sequels or new games. I have too much in my
"yet to play" library to back random games.

(so why am I responding to this post at all? Even I wonder sometimes.)

You know you can't resist... your fans expect no less. :)

especially not for products that will later be released commercially.

I get your point. Is why I don't generally pick random projects, unless
it really is something I want to play that hasn't been created already.
Which is quite hard these days with so many indie devs.

The return on crowdfunding isn't so clear cut. If I invest $1000 will a
poster, some merch and maybe a mention in credits be a "good"
investment. I normally go for the lowest option and only on games I
recognise so not so much a sunk cost.

hmmm... a tabletop, I mean realy dead tree tabletop. Looks good, but I
might skip on this one, have plenty of TT games on the shelf waiting to
    be dusted off. :)
