Always a classic bit. "Are we the baddies?" is a common reference
amongst my in-group whenever we question our actions. ;-P

Mind you - and I'm just bringing this up because I'm a pedant who
can't help myself and in no way as any defense of Nazis - skulls
weren't unique to the Nazis (and even then, it was largely the SS -
the worst of the worst - who had the skull emblem). But units
throughout history have used the skull as their symbol - including,
currently, the US Marine Reconnaissance squadrons, and the "Jolly
Rogers" naval air unit. Then again, pointing to the US Military may
not necessarily be the best evidence for disproving the "skulls are
only used by baddies" theory :-)

Regardless, it wasn't unique to just the Nazis even during WW2 on both
sides of the war, and they /all/ couldn't have been the "baddies"...
    could they?

Still, if the "rats anus" emblem is symbolic of better (worse?)
villainy (as postulated by the linked video), then perhaps fiction has
improved upon the model with the invention of the Skaven (from
Warhammer). Because if anybody were to use that emblem, it would be
    the Skaven

I think what makes the SS stand out is the sheer scale of brutality and
the fact that it was both part of their ethos and a determined policy.
Then you have the 'baddies' of the SS themselves, Einsatzgruppen units
which were brutal even their standards.

Some other factors, whereas the USSR could be othered into that couldn't
happen to us with Germany you really can't do which is especially true
for the British with their shared culture and history. Another factor,
post war the western allies pushed (especially it would seem the US) a narrative that it was just the SS and the Wehrmacht weren't like that.

Regardless, it wasn't unique to just the Nazis even during WW2 on both
sides of the war, and they /all/ couldn't have been the "baddies"...
    could they?

The western allies can be considered to have had a relatively 'clean'
war expect the rather questionable aerial bombing of civilian targets especially in the late war when the focus was more on get the big map
out and see what we haven't bombed yet.

The USSR, well the same can't be said for them. It's certainly less well
know about in the west but yes the NKVD had units that were the
    equivalent of the Einsatzgruppen.

As a complete aside, a term I now like is westsplaining as it's one of
those things that it needs to be pointed out to you to see it.
