• FREE GAMES: "Blazing Sails" and "Dying Light"

From Spalls Hurgenson@21:1/5 to All on Thu Apr 6 08:19:03 2023
Okay, I admit. I'm cheating a little bit with this post. I'm sending
it out early, a few hours before these games are actually available.
But that's only because I won't be able to post them at the correct
time, and if I wait too long Ant will pre-empt me, and THAT CANNOT BE
    ALLOWED! Hence, the cheating.

Anyway, free games? Yup, free games.

    This week we get:

    * Dying Light: Enhanced Edition
    https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/dying-light
Zombie games are, arguably, passe but if you gotta pick one to get for
free, "Dying Light" isn't a bad choice. Yes, it's a bit heavy on the
open-world aspect - too much grinding for loot and XP - but it has a
big map that's fun to traverse, the combat is fun (at least, it's fun
once you get some of the higher tier skills; it's a bit of a pain in
the start), and the zombies actually feel a bit threatening. Is this
the greatest game ever made? Not even close, but it's still a pretty
good zombie game. That's good enough for me.

    * Blazing Sails
    https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/blazing-sails
Disappointingly, that's "sails" and not "saddles" (although wouldn't a
Mel Brooks inspired western video game be fun?) No, "Blazing Sails" is
all about pirates; it's an online PVP game where you sail the seas in cannon-laden ships, first bombarding other players from afar before
leaping across and engaging them more directly with flintlock and
cutlass. But before you get too excited (assuming the concept excites
you at all), note that the game is still in early access though and
the server population is fairly low, though. Still, if your inner
corsair demands booty and blood, maybe this free game will be
    interesting to you.

Anyway, you got the usual 7 days (not including the three or so hours
before these games actually become available) to claim the loot and
perhaps answer the age-old question of "zombies or pirates" Because
    this week, why not both?

Well if you have to ask that question the answer is obvious! Zombie
    pirates!!

    In space!

Specifically "Space Pirates and Zombies" or SPAZ. Somewhat fun.

Ooh there's a sequel, but ratings are significantly worse and I
wasn't entirely happy with that one though I did finish it.

Sounds horrid. I don't have this one for the free game though. I have

    * Shapez
A factory building game that looks like it was made for windows 3.11

But I also can't get it as I get a 500 error. Not that I really want it, it also
    looks/sounds horrid.

Well, obviously that's a subjective choice, but if I had to choose?
I'd wobble between "Left 4 Dead" and "State of Decay". L4D had by far
the superior gameplay, but "State of Decay" nailed the feeling of
living through a zombie-apocalypse; avoiding the hordes, scavenging
for loot, barricading the windows, worrying about what other survivors
    would do, etc.

Mechanically, "Dying Light" was fun (albeit not as polished as "Left 4
Dead", but the fact that the monsters were zombies felt almost
incidental; they could have been aliens or or giant robots or angry
football hooligans and it would not have made much difference to the
    gameplay or setting.

leaping across and engaging them more directly with flintlock and

Disappointingly, that's "sails" and not "saddles" (although wouldn't a

all about pirates; it's an online PVP game where you sail the seas in

leaping across and engaging them more directly with flintlock and

Sounds horrid. I don't have this one for the free game though. I have

A factory building game that looks like it was made for windows 3.11

But I also can't get it as I get a 500 error. Not that I really want it, it also
    looks/sounds horrid.

Same here - Blazing Sails is listed as "Coming Soon".

I got the error earlier on - Epics checkout system seemed to be down.
    Its working fine now

I got DL & Shapez now, it's working for me too.

Zombie games are, arguably, passe but if you gotta pick one to get for

the greatest game ever made? Not even close, but it's still a pretty
good zombie game. That's good enough for me.

I got around to trying this. It's o.k. I'm up to level 14 so far. I
swear every time I level the zombies get tougher, hit harder and
sometimes new more deadly zombies are added. Even the plain zombies
that were there from the start seem to be getting tougher. I had bought
an orange rarity weapon that was for a few levels one shotting them, but
they take 2 or 3 most of the time now. I feel like I'm going in the
    wrong direction.

I can't survive at night worth a darn either, at least not well enough
to get any quests done that have to be done at night. The UV flares and
traps aren't helping as the nasty jumping zombies just jump from outside
the light and kill me, and they run faster and jump higher than I can.
I think they see through the cammo too.

I put on the co-op online mode but haven't had anyone join to help, I
haven't tried joining anyone else though. I'm about ready to give up on
it, as I'm taking longer and longer breaks from it.
