• Ooooh! New old games

From Spalls Hurgenson@21:1/5 to All on Wed Mar 29 11:39:41 2023
GOG* just put a bunch of 'new' D&D games on its storefront. These new
games being all very old, of course. These include the SSI "Silverbox"
titles ("War of the Lance", "Heroes of the Lance", "Dragons of Flame",
and the strategy game "Shadow Sorcerer"), as well as less-well known
games like "Deathkeep", "Spelljammer", "Dragonstrike" and "Fantasy
Empires". Which - if I'm remembering correctly - finally rounds out
the complete collection of SSI D&D titles for PC.

I had all of these games, of course... barring "Deathkeep", which was
one of that I'd missed. No longer! I grabbed the whole bunch
(apparently buying them all at once nabbed me a steep discount; $20USD
for the lot). Now I have an online digital backup in case my
disk-image archive ever goes sour. ;-)

Honestly, most aren't worth playing. The "Silverbox" games are...
difficult to endure, what with their EGA visuals and PC speaker
noises. "Spelljammer" wasn't a good game even when it was new (despite
how much I wanted to love it due to its offbeat setting). But "Fantasy
Empires" was an adequate - if unexceptional - strategy title with a
huge heaping of D&D dumped into it, and "Dragonstrike" was a fun
arcade shooter; definitely the best dragon-flight simulator of 1990!

So are they worth buying? Probably not, unless you're a massive fan of old-school video games, or have fond memories of one or two of the
titles. Still, I'm glad to see them recovered from the dustbin of
history and made available to fans again.

    * Also on Steam, but GOG seems the more appropriate source for these
    good old games ;-)

I *want* to *want* to try all these out, but I never really got into any past Pool
of Radiance. I played Hillsfar which was a fun little game of being a thief IIRC, not a normal D&D game. Also Curse of the Azure Bonds, which
while I did finish it, just didn't sit with me well enough to have any desire to ever play it ever again or any of the other D&D party goldbox games.

Much later I did play the Dark Suns one, which was very good, possibly even better than PoR. I'm very tempted by the Spelljamer one as IIRC that was around the same time or a bit later.

The "Silverbox" games used a completely different format from the
"Goldbox" titles. The first two - "Dragons of Flame" and "Heroes of
the Lance" - used a display similar to a side-scrolling platformer,
except without the jumping and with RPG stats. It was as much
action-game - dependent on how fast you can mash the keys - as
adventure/RPG and I never cared for either of them. "Shadow Sorcerer"
uses an isometric viewpoint, similar to "Populous", but it's just as
dependent on player skill to resolve combat as its predecessors. "War
of the Lance" is the strategy game of the series (note I got the
titles confused above), and it's decent enough for its time, but it's
archiac graphics and controls make it a lot harder to enjoy today than
    any of the others.

Still, if it's simply the format of the GoldBox games that's holding
you back (and you /really/ wanna play some old-school D&D CRPGs) then
maybe the Silverbox titles are worth a try. But, as much as I wish I
could say otherwise, I don't think you'll be happy with them either.
They haven't aged well, and they were considered the inferior titles
    even when they were new.

Much later I did play the Dark Suns one, which was very good, possibly even >better than PoR. I'm very tempted by the Spelljamer one as IIRC that was >around the same time or a bit later.

Don't. I really wish I didn't have to speak poorly about Spelljammer,
but it is /not/ a good game. It certainly was not up to the standards
of the Dark Sun titles, being more a throwback to the Gold Box titles (personally, I always thought it looked worse even then its older
siblings), and its implementation of the Spelljammer setting was
uninteresting. It does not help that the game is not sure if it wants
to be "Elite" or "Pool of Radiance", and its general design - farmed
out to a third-party developer - isn't very good. If you really want
to see what it's like, play it first on Archive.org before buying it.

One of the 'disadvantages' of avoiding advertising (and not sucking on
the teat of social media) is that I tend not to notice things like
that. Which is to say, I had no idea they're making another D&D movie.

(or, rather, I think I knew one was in the making... but I had no idea

Well, it can't be as bad as the one released in 2000... can it?

Early reviews that I have seen for the movie are good.

Meh. I would have bought the games regardless... and the games release

I did know there was a film been released but wasn't sure when, well
until it became clear that the main actors are doing the rounds on UK TV
and radio. A somewhat amusing one is they appeared in one of our early
evening light chat/topical issues show. They had sent out a reporter to
a gaming club to give a bit of background. I thought that was good if it
wasn't for the fact that of the minute or so of footage it was all about
WH40K with about five seconds focused on TT RPG's.

They do. Or they did. I mean, that's where I got my digital copy, and
I hadn't heard that they'd been taken off market.
(checks GOG. Nope, still there. It's also available on Steam.)

Of course, the game itself is called "Unlimited Adventures", which is
why you may not have found it. It's part of GOG's "Forgotten Realms
Archive Collection 2"*, which also includes all the other GoldBox
games. Not a bad deal for $6USD.

That's weird it shows $9.99 for me and not on sale, and hasn't been
on sale. Oh, you got them backwards, Steam it's on sale for $6.

Thanks for the find though, I'll wait a bit then probably buy it on Gog, not worth the DRM for $3 difference.

I have a couple other games on sale <$2 in my cart. Albion and Aqua Nox 2
if you have any opinion on them.

It still shows up up at $4,59USD on the store page (not the search

Me? Have an opinion on something? Especially if that 'something' is an old-timey game? Now, does that sound like me?!? ;-)

"Albion" is one of those games that strove to be more than its
developers were capable of. Released in that weird era between
old-school and modern RPGs, its odd mix of 3D movement and top-down
combat (or was it the other way around?) were representative of its
mixed heritage. It tried to be a vast open-world game but with a
tightly scripted story. It was science-fiction and fantasy.
Essentially, it wanted to be everything all at once, and while it made
a good shot at that goal, it never accomplished it, and the whole
thing felt bloated and unpolished. There's some really good ideas in
Albion and some impressive moments too, but you have to be really
devoted to the game to see it. It's one of those games that are more
enjoyable for game historians than players; a "look where the ideas
for the more popular games originated" sort of thing. If you're a
lover of old-school DOS games, you might enjoy this. But it's not
going to be an easy relationship. If all you want is a fun game that
you can play without much effort, "Albion" - for all its promise -
    probably isn't for you

And "AquaNox 2"? I mostly remember it for the '3D benchmark program'
that utilized its engines and visuals; it was a free competitor to
theose old 3DMark programs (remember those?). The game itself? I
always found it pretty forgettable; it was essentially an undersea
Wing Commander, except with less polished gameplay and a much less fun
setting. It's a B-list title; fun enough, I suppose, but not
particularly novel. It was most notable for its graphics, which were -
at the time - pretty nice, but once the game had gotten to a certain
    age, few people remembered it.

Well I may have had my mind changed about the film as a critic that I
respect, so one that I tend to like the films he gives good reviews,
gave it a good one and noted that it does indeed have humour in it. The
little clip they showed was using a speak with dead spell and one

But, yeah, I suppose this is intended to capitalize on that movie's
release. But was the timing Hasbro's (the owner of D&D) idea, or GOGs?
Was it the licensee holding up the relese of these games until the
release of the movie, or are the game developers merely hoping to ride
the movie's coattails? Inquiring minds want to know!

Meh. I would have bought the games regardless... and the games release
isn't making me want to see the movie, so whatever the reason, it was
wasted effort as far as I'm concerned. ;-P

I'm just glad they're available, even if I never play or even buy them. I still wish they had Forgotten Realms Adventures as I've heard really
good things about that one, and it's one fans have made a ton of
    adventures for.

The graphics make my eyes bleed unfortunately and also unfortunately I
don't have a sense of nostalgia for the games.

One of the 'disadvantages' of avoiding advertising (and not sucking on
the teat of social media) is that I tend not to notice things like
that. Which is to say, I had no idea they're making another D&D movie.

(or, rather, I think I knew one was in the making... but I had no idea
it was so close to release).

Well, it can't be as bad as the one released in 2000... can it?

From early reviews, and report from people on the D&D groups
that got early (paid) screenings with their prime membership
    it's really good.

Much outrage that there's a druid that shape shifts into an
owlbear though. (It's not in the rules! OMG!)

It's supposedly partially based on or has some involvement
of the critical role youtube/podcast thing, which slightly turns
    me off.

I've tried to avoid much in the way of spoilers, but did see the
trailer which looks cool. I might pop out to see it this weekend.

Well I may have had my mind changed about the film as a critic that I >respect, so one that I tend to like the films he gives good reviews,
gave it a good one and noted that it does indeed have humour in it. The >little clip they showed was using a speak with dead spell and one

Here is the little known verbal component to the "Speak With the Dead"
spell. It's in the form of a song. If you play a cleric, be sure to
use it in your next tabletop session to add just that added bit of versimilitude to your game

(to the theme of the Mr. Ed theme song)
"A corpse is a corpse, of course of course
A corpse cannot talk, of course of course
But I can talk with a corpse of course,
'Cause I've got a Speak with the Dead."

    ;-)
