• FREE GAME: Chess Ultra

From Spalls Hurgenson@21:1/5 to All on Thu Mar 23 11:15:37 2023
Another week rolls around. Why do weeks roll, anyway? Are they round?
They always seemed quite linear to me. English is weird. Anyway,
games. You want 'em, Epic has 'em, and I take the credit. Yay me! ;-)

Okay, now this may surprise you but "Chess Ultra"... is a chess game!
And not just any chess game but... no, wait, it /is/ 'just any chess
game'. If you've played any chess game in the last thirty years, this
one isn't going to surprise you. Sure, the visuals might be a bit
sharper than you saw in "Sargon V" and maybe there are more variety in
boards and pieces... but ultimately it's still chess. The biggest
change for this game is that most of it is locked behind DLC, and that
really isn't much of a selling point except to the guy doing the
selling. After all, if you really care about chess, you're still
probably playing "Rebel 12", and if you don't, you're probably
wondering why none of the pieces bash each other to bits. This one
doesn't really offer anything other than its visuals and it being
newer (not better). If you gotta have every chess game, well, here's
    another one; otherwise, why bother?

Also, there's a freebie pack for the free-to-play game "World of
Warships" but if you care about that you can find it yourself ;-)

Seven days and counting. Those roly-poly weeks keep spinning 'round,
    after all.

How's that work "Sorry you don't have a queen unless you pay $40"?!?!

I looked, and got the game, looks like chess pieces and environments.
I can't remember the last time I played chess but it was probably before
I was legally allowed to drink alcohol.

No, it's more like classic Chess Chess.

You move a piece. The other guy moves a piece. Then you move a piece.
Then the other guy moves a piece to where your piece is and gently
    lifts it off the board.

The excitement is palpable, isn't it?

Oh, except you can twirl the board around to look at it from any
angle, just like you'd do in real life. Except you wouldn't do that.
And it's not like you need to do that since the state of the game is understandable from pretty much any angle.*

    It's chess on a computer. That's it.

(I don't know why I'm being so down on the game. I own a number of
chess games on PC. I've played a number of them. I actually even enjoy
an occassional game of chess. Maybe it's the combination of this being
Epic's weekly freebie, the fact that this game doesn't really seem to
be doing anything new for the genre, and the excessive amount of DLC.
I dunno. If you've somehow managed to get through life without owning
a computer chess program, this one is probably fine. But since there
are so many others available, it's really hard to get excited about
    this one)

    * well, maybe except from directly below the board. Unless you're
using a transparent crystal board (only $15.99 extra!)

Don't forget the animations of pieces knocking over other pieces, and the stunning vr without being able to see your hands!

I grabbed this one. I don't have a chess program and maybe I'll start
learning openings and endgames some day.

I wonder if it has a coach?

    A coach sounds interesting.

I was in the chess club in high school... all two of us. It wasn't very popular back then and I found D&D infinitely more interesting.
