I always preferred the mechanics of the first game, but the second
game definitely had a setting that left more of an impression. But it
really shouldn't be too surprising that Valve (or rather, Turtle Rock
Studios, aka 'Valve South') might base scenes in their game on real
locations. It's actually a fairly common practice, often requiring
developers to travel to the place the game will be based on to do
research and take extensive pictures.
