Thursday. Thor's day. WhyIsntItFriday-day? Also, >More-free-games-to-grab-and-never-play day (that name needs
workshopping). Whatever you decide to call it, it's the only day in
the week most of us ever open the Epic client (or visit their
website).
Opening it today, we get:
* City of Gangsters >https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/city-of-gangsters-6c2974
Not, sadly, the awesome (but flawed) 2013 "Omerta: City of Gangsters",
but a 2021 original. Essentially a 'tycoon' game where you manage your >business, except in this case your business is crime. Obviously set in
the American Prohibition era (because its a rare gangster game that
ever uses any other era), you send your boys out to hustle shopkeeps
for protection, smuggle booze, and do some debt collection. But
mechanically, it's still pretty much a micro-management heavy tycoon
game, so if that genre doesn't excite you, "City" probably isn't going
to either.
* Dishonored: Death of the Outsider >https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/dishonored-death-of-the-outsider
A stand-alone expansion to Dishonored 2. But rather than following the
story of Corvo Attano (protagonist of the first two games), this one
has you take the role of Billie Lurk, who is given a quest to -
surprise surprise! - kill the supernatural entity known as "the
Outsider". Otherwise, the game is pretty much just more "Dishonored",
which most would consider a good thing, if a bit unremarkable in
actual execution. It's a fine conclusion to the series, but if you
haven't played the first two games, it probably isn't the best
starting point. Still, a fine game to be added to anyone's video-game
library (and one actually worth playing too!)
Well, that's fattened up our video game libraries nicely. See you next
week, Epic Gamestore Client!
Sims 4 is also free on Epic store!

It's basically like every Thursday. We're stuck in a time loop thanks to Groundhog Day. ;)
I have Dishonored 2. Should I start playing it? Is it supposed to be
good? :-) No, Steams says I played it for 36 minutes. Not sure why I
didn't continue playing it. I don't even remember starting it up!

Only played the first one myself and I enjoyed it up to a point as I
felt that like many games it runs out of steam and I just think, oh I'm
now going to do another level that's much the same as the last level >(designers really could take a look at HL:2) and I didn't find the story >sufficiently engaging that I wanted to see the conclusion.

Is it good? Yes. I think it's fair to say that the game itself is an >extremely well-made and entertaining piece of games software. With
solid mechanics, a well-developed world and two characters to play two >(slightly different) paths, you definitely get your money's worth with
this game.
Having said that, I actually am not a big fan of the game... but
that's more a matter of taste than quality. You can make the world's
greatest aubergine curry and I'm still going to turn my nose up at it, >because I can't stand that fruit. And there's just something about
Arkane Studios games that just... well, they don't turn me off, but I
never can get into them the way they deserve, and the "Dishonored"
games are no different. Whether it's "Arx Fatalis", "Prey" or any of
their others, I've never been their biggest fan.
But I'd never say they aren't good games.

I though they'd died of as well but a quick bit of googlefoo says there
are a small number of franchises still using the brand name. I can't
remember when it disappeared in the UK but I do remember when an
equivalent type chain of stores, Maplins, went bust. To be honest I can
see why as how many people are still in the hobby.

A lot of that is because the equipment the people used to fiddle with is
now built in such a way that one CAN'T really fiddle with it.

Yeah, in Livingston and Bozeman Montana.
I wouldn't know what we would do without the one in Livingston.
Oh, well those are far enough in the boonies they may not have gotten
the message that the chain went out of business. :P
Preach on! If I could go back in time, I'd shoot the guy who invented
sonic welding. Well, maybe not shoot him but, man, that's something I
wish would die in electronic manufacture. Everything gets entombed in
plastic cases you can't open without breaking the plastic.
Of course, even when you do get the thing open, everything is so
black-boxed with single system-on-a-chip that there's barely anything
inside that you /can/ replace; maybe a battery and a few capacitors.
But there is hardly anything left to fiddle with.
It's getting to the point that people don't even EXPECT to repair
things anymore. Phone broke? Toss it and get a new one. TV broke? Toss
it and get a new one. Car broke? Well,we're not quite there yet, but
give it time...

But I'd never say they aren't good games.
I will try it again tomorrow. I am enjoying the new remake of
DeadSpace and a couple of others now.

Last time I tried to fix a phone was about 4 years ago, and it went from broke, to really and truly broke. Everything was sealed up, it basically broke the screen from having to separate it from the case with the glue holding it on. I found out after you have to heat the glue way up to get
it to separate, best way using a hot knife (how good can that be for the electronics and plastics?!)
