Yep. I've disabled updates (changed to update on launch) on all
installed games, and generally just shut down steam entirely when I'm not planning on playing a steam game. It's gotten out of hand.

I feel like Steam is updating requiring restarting it multiple times a day just to have more ads pop up when it opens. Why does it need to update and restart more than once a day? Let alone week!

Have they started down the evil path at long last?

Or did they do that a long time ago and I just noticed? I did notice in Dec they were updating a lot, I just may not have noticed any other evil stuff they're doing.

    I hear ya!

And why are games that are about 3 years or more old still updating??
That doesn't happen with GOG and other games.

Not much help here but I can't say I find that. Indeed I can't remember
the last time it did. I think (could be wrong) that it's normally
associated with here's some ads that appears in a separate window.
Possibly it varies from region to region?

I can't say I find it, updating games, a problem so I just let it do
    it's job in the background.

I haven't experienced this recently, but it has happened in the past.
Sometimes Steam would update, start running, then minutes later demand
    another update.

But this wasn't some nefarious ploy by Valve to destroy our sanity,
just a bug in the updater where - for whatever reason - the updated
version either wasn't recognized or wasn't applied correctly.

Eventually it would work itself out. Until then, a bit annoying.

Are there more adverts in Steam? I mean, the storefront is arguably
nothing but, but that's sort of to be expected, and it is only for
games they sell. There aren't any adverts elsewhere, are there?
    Certainly no pop-ups.

I've a number of issues with Steam, but that's not one of them.

It is? I haven't noticed but then I don't keep the Steam front end up
all the time. Or ever really. And I don't use it to start any Steam
based games I have, I still do individual shortcuts on my desktop since
I rarely am playing more than 2 or 3 games in the same month.

Occasional y I get the separate ad window on Steam start-up that you can
click through to see if there's anything interesting.

I wished we could disable this pop-up. I never look.

can't say I've ever seen that. I wonder if once long-ago there was a
'don't show pop-ups' setting in Steam that has since been removed, but
    is still being honored.

Of course, now that I've said I never get these sort of pop-ups, I'm
sure to get one. That's pretty much how these things work. ;-P

I did check under Settings->Interface and there's an option about
notification of updates, new games etc. I've now disabled it.
