Ugh, the WoW graphics, even if it's good, I couldn't stand those. Couldn't
get past him saying 'this is shiny'. Barf.

Well, I never /heard/ of "Vampire Survivors", so first thing to do is
    look at that one...

Huh. A retro-grafix'd 'action-roguelike' that has you mowing down
'thousands of night creatures and survive to dawn'. No actual control
over the combat; you just wander about and collect items that
automatically cause damage to the enemies. Extremely repetitive levels
and monsters, with no real variation in gameplay. It's not a mobile
game, but it seems to share some of the same genetics: immediate
action, no depth, and designed for short play-times.

Well, that's not giving me any 'must buy' vibes.

And "Army of Ruin" is like that? Admittedly, the visuals are improved
    - somewhat - but the gameplay seems more or less the same.

Even free I'm not sure I'd add it to my library. But paying $4USD for
the privilege? I dont' think so.

But different strokes, and all that. I'm sure nobody here understands
my fascination with Euro/American Truck Simulator either. ;-)

It's a bit more than that, there's strategy in which weapons and upgrades
you get, getting various unlocks so you can have better weapons to choose
from, what build you might try to get etc. You can also learn where things
    are on the levels.

Tactically there's some tricks as well like when to 'run' and try to avoid things, when to sit still, how to herd certain mobs, when to pickup
certain drops that affect you or the enemies there's one that's like a smartbomb for instance.

It feels a lot better than the typical bullet hell to me once you get a few runs under you belt and things start to pick up, but YRMV.

It tends to go a bit long in the middle level ranges of play, there's a 30 minute timer, but it can end up being a lot longer if you're carefully considering which weapon upgrades to take since time is paused
    then.

Well, that's not giving me any 'must buy' vibes.

"Improved" graphics is in the eye of the beholder, and is quite the
    opposite in my eye.

Apparently someone does since I saw some discussion on it. Not I
    though :P

Wait, what? How did you get through 2022 without hearing of Vampire
Survivors? It's so popular it's spawned bunch of clones and practically
become it's own genre of game. Plenty of news articles were written
about it on all the gaming sites.

I mean I barely know anything about it, it doesn't look like a game
I'd like to play, but I couldn't help but noticing it existed and was
a big hit. It's kind like not knowing that Queen Elizabeth II died.

When I first played Vampire Survivors, a relatively short time in I
thought to myself "oh shit, someone finally did it.. someone found
the addictiveness formula that so many old school games had..
something that has mostly been lost over the last few decades".

It's a hard thing to describe, it taps into something psychological
that if any game developer truly understood, they would have already
taken over the entire gaming industry by now.

It would be nice if, instead of cloning the gameplay itself, someone
could figure out what elements make it so addictive and focus on
bringing those elements into a bunch of different genres. But since
that's a lot harder, and "clones" seem to be part of action gaming
culture (look at all the pacman inspired games for example), I guess
    clones are better than nothing.

Well, yeah, but it is understandable if you've not heard.

    It was 420 years ago.

Like you, it's not the sort of game I'd like to play (may days of arcade shooters are very much over) but I had heard of it.
